Can we add an option for "packaging"? That will often determine whether or not I purchase something. Passed on Crimson BAT and Kamakura because of it.

The write-in option is recognized. Only had 10 blanks so I guess that could be part of design accuracy, nostalgia, fresh take...

Polls.
...I kid Truthfully, it's generally the fandom itself. Don't get me wrong, I've met a great many people here that I genuinely feel I'd be down to have a beer with IRL, but the constant complaints and negativity are kind of a drain on what should be a simple temporary escape from reality. (As an afterthought: No, I don't lump this thread in with "constant complaints and negativity")

The traits most important to me as a collector are Scale, Articulation, Availability, and Affordability.
In 1981, when we were collecting N gauge scale train sets, I would enjoy looking at the HO scale items in the hobby store, but only collected N scale. My G.I. Joe collecting is like that too, because I enjoy looking at the photos posted of the Classified line, but only collect the 1:18 scale items (O-ring, New Sculpt, and Modern Era) so I wouldn't take home a Classified figure if Hasbro were handing them out for free. They are simply too large for my collection. Figure articulation can be important to me, because if they can't interact well with their vehicles or playsets, then they aren't much of a toy to me, but more like a 5 POA statue. If their poses are never meant to be changed, then better off to be collecting a photograph or artwork rather than the actual action figure. It is not how many points of articulation exist, but rather how well it is done. For example, the Classified figures have a strange "folding bed" hinge above the waistline that allows daylight to pass through, ruining the look of some otherwise near perfect figures. Availability determines whether I can even hope to add something to my collection. I won't take a day off or cancel my plans just to hover over a keyboard and hope to be one of the first few hundred customers to place something on pre-order. If they make the purchase too stressful to enjoy, then for me this hobby's fun is gone, and I would rather be doing something else. The cost of this or any other hobby is relevant to me, so keeping things affordable is important now. In my youth, I understood that toys such as the Flagg, Terror Drome, or even items as small as the Cobra Stinger just weren't happening sometimes because of economic challenges and important bills to be paid. As an adult, I can afford more now, but there are still bills to be paid and other economic challenges which are far more important than toys. I will collect only what I want and can afford.

I overlook most of what goes on around here, otherwise it's the same as walking into a steakhouse and complaining that someone is eating meat. It's a forum for discussion of GI Joe. But, I notice more and more remarks focus on the gear and the accuracy of weapons. Much of the time, when I open figures, I'm less interested in pulling all the gear from the package and focus on the figure itself. The characters are more interesting to me.

I'm usually pretty forgiving with most things when it comes to collecting. Listed below are some things I like and dislike about collecting.
Scale - Not a deal breaker for me, but I do like my figures from the same line to be properly scaled with one another. Head sculpts - I do appreciate good, realistic head sculpts. I will be getting my Classified Falcon figure tomorrow, so I'll see how I feel about it in person. I kind of feel like it will be OK, because everybody looks different in real life anyways. Articulation - I'm not a stickler for excessive amounts of articulation, but I do like practical articulation. I don't see the need for toe articulation like some figures have, but that's just me. This can also go with fit/function, but a big pet peeve of mine is bad QC. It's really annoying when joints snap or are frozen. Availability - I am content ordering from BBTS. I'm also fine with ordering from Target, Walmart, or Pulse. What irks me is when the exclusives sell out so quickly I don't even have a chance at them. Sucks to pay the ebay tax to have a complete collection. Fit/Function - See articulation above. |
