You can say that again LOL.
Personally, I used to be a Marvel purist, but ever since Renegades hit the web, it's become my preferred interpretation, with Cobra as a globalist mega-corp that essentially is the U.S. government in some regards (basically the military-industrial complex/D.C. swamp/international NGO nexus as a single entity), and the Joes as a hard-pressed but steadily-expanding militia of disaffected ex-military, Q-Anon-type bloggers/hackers and concerned/sympathetic private citizens united by nationalist outrage against the hollowing out of America to suit the ambitions of a malevolent, unaccountable "deep state." ;^) Clearly they would already be in charge. The difficulty with a modern version would be defining the Joe team. Half of the Joe team would have sold out and joined Cobra. Good lucky picking the defectors and oath breakers from the roster of fan-favorites. That's a "no-win" scenario. And oath breakers are more duplicitous then outright ideological opposition. All around it is a rough story to write. Besides which, individual Joe team members shouldn't be mouthing off about internal partisan politics.

Cobra felt like a combination of people more for making money than any one political ideology. They'd use anyone who was "disillusioned" with the way the world was in their ranks. Man, woman, Black, white - didn't matter to them (until that one stupid reboot where Baroness couldn't lead Cobra because she was a woman).
-Cobra Commander had the most "ideology", in that he was originally some right wing "don't trust the government" backwoods guy it seemed, who then turned around and blamed the U.S. government and Vietnam War for his brother's death and tried to raise an armed militia for the purpose of overthrowing the government. -Baroness was in the original file cards implied to be a left wing nutjob. In the comics she somehow was CC's #2 but I don't recall much explaining WHY some backwoods yokel had a wealthy European helping his ponzi scheme. The current official website has her as a "just wants to watch the world burn" Joker type. -Destro is just a weapons supplier who will supply anyone who pays for it. Cobra pays the most, hence he works with Cobra. Same with Tomax/Xamont. -Guys like Firefly, Scrap Iron, Bludd, Zartan, etc. were all mercenaries. -Dreadnoks were comprised of various low level terrorists and biker criminals and what not, led by two twins who were British thugs turned Florida Man. Overall, though, they are definitely the movie version of SPECTRE aka "play all sides against each other to make $$$$$". If GI Joe paid Cobra I have little doubt Cobra would happily sell weapons to the U.S. and not given a flying shit about who is paying. Once they got the island, CC didn't even care about the U.S. or his brother or Snake-Eyes anymore. Of course, w also kind of have CC going straight and then apparently being so brain damaged from nearly dying that he just became some crazed tinpot dictator wannabe caricature of himself. |

When it comes to Cobra's ideology, I think they take a "what do you want to hear?" approach. They will say anything to achieve their goals. I the end it is all about the Head Snake getting what he wants. For example...

Cobra seemed more like a carryover from the old WWII-themed comics; Part Nazis, part Hydra, part Wonder Woman nemesis, but mostly a bunch of narcissists in comic book disguises vying for who should be in charge of the world when none of them knew how to organize their own ranks. Most are mercs who go where the money is. Baroness seems like one of the few who was "loyal" to CC besides the troops and the writers kept CC crazy/buffoon because that was the only way to get him past the censors (I would reckon). It would be interesting to have seen some of the scripts/comics before they went in for approval from the censors and the bean counters. |
