The *only* reason Hasbro thinks 18th-scale is too expensive for the profit is because they completely and wholly fucked up the Marvel 18th effort with so much absolute dogshit product that never capitalized on 18th scales' strengths via vehicles and playsets. If they had done that line correctly every last one of those ML figures would be ours *and* we'd have a FantastiCar, QuinJet that can carry a Quintet of Avengers, that goddamned SHIELD Flying Car they tickled our balls with.

Still, those vehicles cost $$$ to make. Why invest in that when vehicles pretty much die routinely at retail in any scale?
Look at all the JP and Fortnite and Halo stuff. It almost ALL hits clearance, especially the vehicles. Again, it's companies seeing that for similar prices they can make more profit investing in the larger figures. Just as why Hasbro is releasing endless clone repaints - because they damn well know it's cheap and an easy sell instead of endlessly tooling new figures and watching them rot. Why would you as a company continue to say make tons of new tooling when you watched Jyns and Reys and Snokes and Cassians and Roses pile up and up and up when you can just repaint the same clone for the umpteenth time or put a new torso and head on a Luke from 15 years ago and call it a day, knowing it will sell? I'm surprised at how they put so much effort into Dark Times Vader, but I suspect that's simply because they will recycle this figure in various forms for the next 20 years. |

TBS really irks me when I see us getting that old ass Starkiller for TVC, and TBS got what in the past few years - HTTE Luke, Thrawn, Karnor Jax, Revan, Bastilla Shan, Jaina Solo, Mara Jade, Malgus, Nihilus, and various kitbashes like the Republic Commandos.
Such a joke. |

I was just going with EU stuff from the era when Star Wars was mostly 3.75, and yet 3.75 collectors are getting the total shaft. |

Well, Vader sells and that's the main reason. Looking at it the RotJ upcoming Vader is probably mostly DT Vader I'd wager.
As for them having a thumb on who is popular - that's on Disney, not Hasbro. Hasbro has routinely said Disney has kept so much secret since the first time the TFA figures leaked (specifically Rey with lightsaber) that they know who is coming when they watch the movie along with the rest of us. For instance, when Rise of Skywalker came out a Star Wars team member said that if the Knights of Ren were like the Praetorian Guards (who they said absolutely flopped in sales) in terms of importance, they wouldn't bother making more. Movie came out, Hasbro learned this the same time we did that they sucked and jobbed and died, and thus we got no more KoR. Same reason why they made a tiny ass Rise line, and we still to this day have no Palpatine or even a Kylo Ren beyond the TFA one. Another was when the team said Disney sends them a photo of a character and nothing else and they have to take the chance that this character is a main character or not. Hence why the made so many Roses. You can see more and more Hasbro is leaning on making "what sells" to them and unless it's dictated by Disney (ie Reva in every line), that's that. |

One of the principle reasons I didn't ever wade into Black Series was that I didn't want to rebuild the roster of Star Wars characters I had accrued at 3.75. I can't believe the shit they've gotten- Jaina Solo, two different Revans, Bastila Shan, Malgus incoming- they're catching up quicker than I thought with characters I thought would never be made in Black Series. So much new tooling, as well. Another reason I don't believe that these budgets don't have any crossover.

Because according to various sources, it costs almost the same to make a 3.75 figure and a 6" figure. And one you can sell for maybe $15.99 and one you can sell for $25.99.
So from a profit standpoint, it makes sense for companies to force 6" figures as the norm. We saw this with Marvel Universe - Hasbro just flat out ended it and went back to 6" completely and you either adapt or die. Last edited by paokole; 02-09-2023 at 01:20 PM.. |

Hence why the made so many Roses. You can see more and more Hasbro is leaning on making "what sells" to them and unless it's dictated by Disney (ie Reva in every line), that's that. that was the case for the mandalorian series; while it did come after those other movies, it's wave was still interspersed with characters from other star wars things. so for rise, they could have gotten away with "ok, we know luke is in it. we know rey is in it" etc. and made them, and then padded the wave out with other figures like lando or clones. even the solo movie had figures from other star wars stuff in them. and i just realized we dont have a dryden vos. they could have went balls out for force awakens, because it's the first new star wars movie. then "ok, here's some of the popular figures" in the second one with figures from the first. and then repeat for the third. then after the movie came out, and characters jobbed out, they'd make figures of the ones that didnt and were decent enough for a figure. but htey didnt, and it's easy to blame disney for not leaking (understandably blaming disney, but still, they've made movie toys for a long time and should sort of get who to make even by what they're told). vader sells, sure. but he, like luke, dont need a release for a while. especially a retooled han solo endor, without his jacket. i dont know, i just dont buy the reasons much anymore. the "got to have every single thing" star wars collectors are going to still buy every single thing, so, how do they hurt any by making a character like cobb vanth over making a clone?
