As an aside to playability, I do need to add here that I don't think the 90s kids needed or wanted the bright neon colors, it was just a sensibility of the 90s that really wasn't repeated ever.
Also, the problem wasn't so much the colors themselves, but how much they clashed with previous years. I think the O-Ring era could have easily continued into 1997 at least had they not alienated the kids who were still collecting Joe by making pieces that didn't fit with earlier years. Even 1991 Snake Eyes looked odd riding on the 1990 Hammer with Salvo, *1992* Battle Commanders Hawk, Stretcher, and Rampart. It was like a color-attention war was going on in the boys toys' aisle and heading for critical mass. With that said the early 90s were wacky as hell with the neon - it wasn't relegated to toys either LOL. Last edited by HitandRun; 02-03-2023 at 10:01 PM.. |

It was like a color-attention war was going on in the boys toys' aisle and heading for critical mass. I generally agree about the neon, especially when it was applied so broadly or arbitrarily. Some figures, like 1990 Heavy Duty, had splashes of neon-ish green camo, very bright, which (in moderation) worked well (so did POC Shadow Tracker, for that matter). And of course, the best use of neon ever, was the Alley Viper. I'm glad you didn't mention the spring-loaded rocket launchers though, I think they get a bad rap, being associated with 90s Joes and being wonkily-designed and colored. For vehicles, or larger figures (*ahem* 6" scale, um, Classified) I think they're a fun and useable action feature. But again, we kind of have to distinguish between "toy" and "adult collectible" priorities, with some of this.

Who was in charge of GI Joe during the 'Real American Hero Collection' and 'GI Joe vs Cobra' years?

No clue to be honest. It's been a year or two since I went down the cancelled Battler Rangers line rabbit hole. Off the top of my head I just remember reading/hearing that their was an internal power struggle between Hasbro and the newly acquired Kenner employees/execs. I believe a reason for the poor quality of the 97 figures - namely the Stars and Stripes set was due to the former kenner folks screwing the pooch on QC and using that softer plastic. I've honestly never looked into hasbro leadership outside of finding that small bit of information on how the ARAH line met it's demise.

Just googled cancelled Battle Rangers GI Joe line.
Here is a thread on Hisstank if you want to get more background on the cancelled line: https://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-j...rs-1995-a.html |

No, I don't think Battle Rangers would have saved the line. By the mid 90's toy buying tastes had shifted to Ninja Turtles, Power Rangers, and X-Men figures. That's not to say it wouldn't have been successful, because by a lot of reports, Joe was still selling pretty "OK" even in the mid-90's and it was more the internal politics mentioned above that killed the line than poor sales. I just doubt it would have returned Joe to the "golden age."
I doubt Battle Rangers would even have brought back many of us "hardcore" fans who lapsed in the early-mid 90's while teenagerdom overtook us. It's easy to look back through nostalgia colored glasses and say, "Oh yeah, it totally would have been huge!" but I bet if a lot of us looked back objectively we might realize that we were probably occupied with other things at the time. I may never have fully ceased my toy buying habits, but they definitely waned during those years (limited mostly to aforementioned X-Men figures), and didn't really start to pick up again until the late 90's with the resurgent Star Wars line (and for Joe, the TRU exclusives). Many of the folks here lapsed all the way from the early-mid 90's til' the 25th Anniversary, from the way it sounds. I doubt Battle Rangers would have changed that. Quote:
I don't think that is true. A postponing of the cancellation would have meant no cancellation. The line came back in '97 anyway. So if they released the '95 line, they would have just needed to release a '96 line up and then pick up where the '97 line began and there would have been no years of no Joes until '99.
I really wish they had just continued with the line, that way we would have a few more years worth of product to collect. If the line was good enough to restart just a few years later, why pull the plug to begin with? Anybody have hi res photos of that? I would love to see what the figures in the artwork look like. I think that if released, this then new incarnation of Gi Joe would have saved the line in some regard. When ARAH died and S6, JvC and VvV took over, the Gi Joe brand declined even further. Fast forward to today when few retailers will carry joes and others may have them, sell them and never restock. This brings on several other issues such as scalpers (oops, I mean opportunistic collectors), ebay price hikes, etc.
If ARAH would have continued into Battle Corps Rangers (assuming they moved completely away from needle-in-the-eyes colors of the early 90's) and used it as a launch pad from which to produce new vehicles with quality comparable or better than original ARAH and new figures along with them. This may have kept interest in joes alive enough to reach today where maybe we could actually go into a Walmart, TRU, etc., and find more than a peg or two of joes. As a side note, I can't help but scratch my head in wonder when I go into a Walmart and see a joe or two sitting on the same peg for weeks while the o-ring Adventure Series figures and vehicles are constantly selling and being restocked. Perhaps the change from simple o-ring to super-articulated fancy sculpts have turned children off? I digress. |
