Wow, you've got over 100 posts and have never read an issue?
I think you'll get the universal advice that you should start with Hama's Marvel comics run. They've been reprinted several times, often with more modern covers, so you might have to make sure the books are by Hama and Trimpe (or other 80's artists). I think they're in 10-issue tpbs, and I'd start with tpb #1, unless you're sort of tight on cash. I don't feel like the run REALLY gets going until issue #21 (so tpb vol 3, probably?), and then it's fantastic. Hama's GI Joe: Special Missions is (IMO) better than the Real American Hero (ARAH) run, or least "safer"; I think there's only one sort-of clunker in the whole 26 issue run, but you'll miss out on some of the character development that happens in ARAH. My quick internet search makes me think you asked the question at sort of a bad time, as with IDW losing the license their out of print and pricey, but I'm sure somebody on here will jump in if I'm wrong. Bottom line at bottom, I'd look on ebay for the classic Marvel run tpbs, to include GI Joe Special Missions. Looks like as of now there's a Special Missions tpb on there for $35 with free shipping. |

Definitely start with the Hama Marvel run. You may want to just stop after that one ends, too. The Hama IDW run isn't as good. Some people in here enjoy the DDP and IDW non-Hama runs, but I didn't read those in their entirety, so can't comment. What I did see of them didn't look very good to me, though.

My personal preference in the complete Hama run, in order from 1-155, and then complete it with Frontline 1-4 from the Devil's Due days.
It was written by Hama and set in continuity after the Marvel series, set in January 1995. It manages to tie up some loose ends and feel like an "ending" but it left the door open to more. Obviously, it's been ret-conned out of existence once the IDW series began, but I think the final epilogue to Frontline #4 was the best conclusion, cause it actually acknowledged the passing of time and gave closure to a few characters. Don't continue if you don't wanna spoil it!!! Last edited by Otomo; 01-13-2023 at 05:46 AM.. |

I recommend starting with Marvel’s run then Special Missions then Declassified, then the DDP books followed by IDW.

Enjoy! I also very much recommend Cobra: The Last Laugh for your list, an incredibly memorable neo-noir undercover story. It starts along with IDW's continuity, and can be read on its own too.
I too have been meaning to dig into the Hama run, did read some of it years ago, issue #21 is a classic for sure. I hear it gets better and better for a while, after starting a bit slow. |

Marvel #21 from 1984. No dialogue, but it sets the stage for the Arashikage storyline, which is the heart of ARAH. Everything before that is fun, but generic.

Marvel 1 to 155, special missions marvel, and declassified mini series. Don’t bother with idw.

Then, if you want to see an "alternate universe" Joe line that branched away from Marvel following #155, read the Devil's Due run from the early 2000's. It was not good, but had a few nice points, like the influx of new characters. ***Spoiler / critique of the Marvel run ahead:*** It starts to rapidly decline in quality after issue #50. My opinion only. Just prepare to be a bit let down. |
