That is the absolute truth.
I am tempted with the retro Indy figure because I always wanted him as a kid. The only figure from that line I ever saw at Children's Palace was the Cairo Swordsman.

I wonder who at Hasbro dislikes the 4" line. I had my fingers crossed that Hasbro would re-release the Crystal Skull era. I bet they lost all the molds and tooling from the China to Vietnam manufacturing move anyways. One of the most underrated toy lines, I was more into Gi Joe ME and skipped the Indy line.

The writing was on the wall in 2008 with the last Indy 1:18 line, but there was still apparently enough older boys into figures to justify a more "sophisticated" action figure line. Basically, 2008 boys were closer to 80s boys when it comes to "play patterns." A decade and a half later, and they're nothing like us in that regard now. I really do find that sad.

Yeah, me too. I knew they were out there and saw one every so often, but I don't remember seeing them in stores/could never find them to buy. I asked for some for my birthday and got other stuff instead, so my mom apparently couldn't find them either. I don't think they were carried by every retailer like Star Wars and GI Joe was. If you didn't get to shop at a Toys R Us or Playworld often, you probably just didn't see 'em. They came and went as a result. There was a Temple of Doom line of figures, but they were made by LJN (IIRC) and I think were larger than 3.75".

Regular Kenner Indiana Jones was impossible to find back in the 80's. I never recall seeing him or Marion. The rest of the stuff was clearance fodder, some lingering in Toys R Us for years (no scalpers, less collectors and high production runs). Also, Kenner didn't have the RotLA toys when the film was release, but the next after.
LJN's were bigger figures. They made like 3 characters and that was it. A few prototypes for other stuff exist. I think 6-inch figures have gained popularity due to late Gen Xers and Gen Yers who grew up on TMNT, Toy Biz and 90's stuff. Now if I still my 80's Kenner Raiders stuff, I'd be tempted by the retro Indy and Marion at least. But I don't and I'm not starting over. |

I got my vintage figs at Kay Bee toys for 1.99 each. Don’t recall ever seeing them any where else. Found all except regular Indy, Marion and Belloq in robes. Always wanted the others bad and the Streets of Cairo set.

I wonder if Indy being so hard to find is why they now feel the need to overproduce the main character(s) in a toy line. I mean, in this day and age, the very last thing you'd expect is to not find the Indy.

It's pretty simple. They're still running the Toyline like its for children. While lying and saying 3.75 is dead to Children. They want their Adult 1980's Kid Money while trying to maximize the 2023 Kids Toy Money. Despite the fact they've priced the Children out of the Retro Indiana Jones toyline right? Crazy, but this is type of derp is so common in corporatism it's amazing. |

There are a couple of factors at play here. One is that manufacturing methods have changed around the lower price of plastic, which means that they can make bigger figures cheaper, and a lot of the problems (like heads/hands falling off) aren't an issue on larger figure joints. There's not really an incentive to produce simpler, smaller figures for the same amount of money, because rather than producing more toy, the money is being blown on the manufacturing process. It's lose-lose for both the manufacturer and the child. |
