Hi All! This is James K., the lead on the upcoming G.I. Joe Fan Club. I appreciate the praise from those excited and understand the hesitations in regards to the direction taken. I thought I'd say hi and elaborate on some points while I make the rounds. If some of you listened to What's On Joe Mind? last Friday, some of this might be already understood.
If you don't know me, I'm "the book guy" (RAHCGuidebooks.com) or "the nut in the wild costumes" at past Joe Cons (I'll let you Google those at your own discretion). I started attending Joe Con in 04, I obviously love the brand (who here doesn't?), but if the people were lame, I would've probably not gone back nor been as active as I am today. I've always enjoyed the forums like HissTank.com but love boots on the ground toy shows. I felt 2022, i.e. the 40th Anniversary of A Real American Hero, was the year to regroup and start some sort of G.I. Joe Club presence. The club is indeed unofficial and, no, I have yet to reach out to Hasbro, Inc. for any licensing. I don't want to discuss a product that is untested and the process unrefined. I also didn't know what the membership would look like to warrant any official licensing fees. For better or worse, official club status does not necessarily mean action figures. I would obviously love to provide fan-demanded, i.e. not mainstream core characters, action figures, vehicles, and licensed product, but the first step was to get organized and streamline the conversation as to what the fandom (as a whole) wants. That's what a properly run fan club does and what I will strive to do. The lack of licensed action figures was the first concern. The goal was to then provide as many items as possible to make the membership nostalgic and worth the price. I've since read here and abroad interest in alternative items and can say the community's pulse will be taken regularly as far as what members want and what nonmembers would want to join. I can also say that members will be given access to the Fan Club store for additional items, some of which have already been suggested by fans. ;) It is undecided if nonmembers can buy Fan Club items at an increased rate or not at all. Non members will have opportunities to win Fan Club items at various shows the Fan Club attends, depending on whatever arrangement with the show-runner(s). The newsletter is currently quarterly to make sure four issues are done properly as opposed to, say, six or more issues done poorly. I would hope year one gets enough steam to warrant more newsletters with larger page counts (or a mixture of the two). The newsletter will be more than just news, it will be informative as much as it will be community/lifestyle focused. I can't promise late-breaking news without some official communication from Hasbro but I could only assume that would come with "official" licensing. Right now the fandom has no club and nothing in the way of official, fan-focused product (what we received in the past). Again, 2022 felt like the year to do a Fan Club with the hopes for some phenomenal fan offerings in the near future. I would never want anyone to buy something they have zero desire to own but in order to get the door open to some possibilities, I can only encourage everyone to join the G.I. Joe Fan Club this year and see where it goes. I'll say year one will be a learning year and probably have some hangups but I think beyond year one, the G.I. Joe Fan Club will be a regularly fun and fulfilling part of your G.I Joe experience throughout the year. |

I hope that covers most of what's been discussed so far and please post any further questions below and I'll do my best to swing by often enough to answer them. Thanks and hope to see you on the quarterly mailing list!

p.s. If anyone wants to contribute to the newsletter, hit me up at [email protected] to discuss the details. Like I said, community pieces are just as important as informative (meetups, customizing tips, fan art, etc.) Thanks!

Update from 9/28/22:
Hi All, Checking in with the latest update. Most of the membership items have arrived and are being packaged. I am still waiting on a few printed pieces and half the challenge coins are held up in transit. Attached is a photograph of everything so far. As you can see, there is some custom packaging but the rest will remain a surprise. Suffice to say, we think the concept turned out better than expected! We have reviewed the comments in the introductory survey, thanks for your feedback! There were some great suggestions, we’ll try to provide as many as possible, starting by adding some requests in the newsletters. While the Membership Kits have been in a holding pattern, we have been working on expanding the website (our secondary mission) and looking forward to getting the results soon. We are also finalizing the inaugural store offerings which will be revealed alongside the Membership Kit “shipped” update. Have you been working on any exciting projects? The criteria, contest rules, and other specifics are in the inaugural G.I. Joe Fan Club newsletter and we’re looking forward to seeing some amazing results! To recap, the categories are: customs, dioramas, costuming, photography, and art (outside the aforementioned categories). I’m staring at the trophy concept right now with a smile as wide as GI Joe HQ, so hopefully you’ll find a category that appeals to you! Finally, David T Allen has spearheaded some membership exclusive video content, we’d done a few recordings, and will be providing a members’ only video channel that’ll explore some of the heartier aspects of the wonderful world of G.I. Joe. We can’t thank you all for helping to make this happen and looking forward to seeing phase one finalized! p.s. If you weren’t aware, Hasbro is hosting its Pulse Con Friday and Saturday so follow us online for their updates! G.I. Joe Fan Club Staff

Email update today:
Hi all! We hope everyone is enjoying the holidays and staying warm. At GIJFC HQ, we had a good run of warmth before tonight. We don't quite have the Christmas Miricle we wanted (Membership Kits shipped) but we at least wanted to show newsletters have arrived. We will finish preparing and packing Kit items in the adjusted packaging and ship them out in the upcoming weeks. We are extremely happy to be on the downslope of this project and can't thank everyone enough for their understanding. Trust us when we say there were many lessons learned and will be take a wide turn to steer clear thus avoiding future issues. If this update looks familiar, it should. Enough members claimed they didn't receive it while corresponding, so we thought it was best to send it out again. If you did receive the update below, there has been nothing added to it, only this holiday addendum. On behalf of the G.I. Joe Fan Club, we hope your stockings, presents, gift cards, etc. are full of G.I. Joe goodness, time is well spent with your loved ones, and looking forward to some amazing things with G.I. Joe in 2023! Feel free to send in some pictures and any descriptions that we could print in future newsletters showing your fellow members your love for Joe as well as some great holiday additions! G.I. Joe Fan Club Staff

I thought the Club was out of business permanently following a few fiascos including the accounts hack.

I am looking forward to 2023, when the 2022 Membership Kit arrives. (That sounds strange when I read that sentence back to myself.) Oh well, G.I. Joe Fan Club membership in 2023 will most likely go smoother than 2022 did.
