Back when the vintage line was out one of the things that I used to do was I'd go into the toy section to read the file cards on the JOEs and COBRAs. As with most of us I've found those two paragraphs to be interesting reading and it was because of the file cards that I learned what the Warsaw Pact was and what scruples meant.
This continue as an adult even though I wasn't collecting I would still stop and read the file cards on the figures. Needless to say I was pissec when the file cards stopped giving us much info on the characters. Now despite the "click bait," title to this thread I do want not only do I want what we've come to expect when it comes to a G.I. JOE file card, (i.e. primary and secondary m.o.s., pay grade, where the character trained and where he or she served,) on the website I a more detailed history of the character, and I would like for Hasbro to hire somebody to go through all of the JOE media and note which JOEs earned medals for valor and heroism. However, that's not what we're going to get when the file cards return what we'll get is this. If the file card is going to look like the bullshit bios on the website, then I'm cool, (so cool on that,) Hasbro can keep that bullshit.

Yea, I sure miss the filecards. I wish Hasbro would understand the importance of filecards and will bring them back.

I loved the filecards. Info dense and whimsical, they could be a great character study, or educational, or social commentary, or poetic, or ironic. Larry really made a unique art form out of them.
My favorite is probably the Crimson Twins under the line part. Such a great summary of how the system works, summed up in a couple of sentences. The most disappointing was Duke's: In the cartoon, he was the ultimate Joe, their heroic leader, a total badass super soldier. I was so excited to read his filecard and learn more about him and his awesomeness! But his whole filecard was basically about what schools Duke went to and how many languages he spoke. Booooooring! As an adult, I understand how relevant that is for a spec forces soldier, but as a kid it sounded so lame! And the bottom portion of the filecard, which was usually some funny anecdote, but instead Duke makes some weird political statement that completely went over my head as a kid. |

Maybe you already know this, while others might not, that Larry Hama would type on a manual typewriter a couple of pages of notes for each character. It was Kirk Bozigian that wanted to use some of the information to give the copywriter something to print on the backs of the toys, giving us what we know today as the file cards. I still have a copy of Larry Hama's notes for Duke that he wrote before the file card was created. This is what he typed February 1983 and included notes for Hasbro if they were unwilling to go to print with Duke as a Top Sergeant/Master Sergeant/First Sergeant, because Hasbro stated that they wanted him to be an officer: Hauser came from a bi-lingual home and was fluent in French and German at the time of his enlistment in 1960. He graduated Airborne School at Ft. Benning top of class and opted for the US Army Special Language School where he specialized in Han Chinese and Southeast Asian dialects. Went Special Forces in 1963 and did his first tour in the Republic of South Vietnam at the end of that year. First tour in the boonies working with Montagnard tribesmen of the central highlands. Subsequent tours with HHC MACV SOG (Headquarters Headquarters Company, Military Assistance Command Vietnam, Studies and Observation Group). Current assignment: Acting First Sergeant, G.I. Joe Team. Duke's the old vet. Did three tours 'In Country' and ran four different Special Forces schools. Turned down a commission in 1964. Has a tendency to become "one of the boys" and commands by winning respect. Excerpt from his statement declining his commission: "They tell me an officer's job is to impel others to take the risks in order that the officer survives to take the blame in the event of a total catastrophe. With all due respect for your rank, sir... If that's what an officer does, I don't want any part of it." I made Duke a top sergeant, because that's the one slot glaringly missing from the roster. I thought about him being an officer but at his age he would have to at least be a major and it's unheard of for a unit as small as the Joes to have two Staff-grade officers. Also, it's a bit tacky for a much older Major to be serving under such a young Colonel. But, if he must be an officer... (a probability that is probably already concrete -- I have bitten the bullet in advance and prepared these inserts). 1. Current grade: Major. 2. Battlefield commission in 1967. Captured by the NVA in 1969. Escaped six months later. Ran Special Ops School at Langley. Advisory commission on Special Warfare. Chairman, Combined Anti-Terrorist Neutralization Unit. 3. "I don't believe in gadgets. I believe in the infantry. They can throw all that high-tech hardware at each other 'til the sun don't shine no more but the battle isn't won until a walking, breathing, rifle-toting infantryman plants his mud-soaked size-ten combat boots on the other side's turf and claims it with his blood, sweat and all the ammo he can carry."

The thing I always remember about the filecard was how mean the Joes were. So and so was the meanest, he was the rudest this guy or that guy was a tough sunvabitch and so MEAN. Always felt weird how mean the heroes were.

The Classified filecard refers to Duke as an operative. That sounds too CIA. Wouldn't operator have been more appropriate?

I know next to nothing about the Classified figures, so that makes me wonder, do any of the Joes in that product line have any mention of the military on their packaging, or are they all treated as civilians now?

These sound too much like video game rankings or something. Vanguard and Skydiving levels? Where's the military rank and MOS? What branch? What combat schools attended? Qualified expert with what weapons, other than Hasbro Nerf Blaster?

That's an excellent point and is probably intentionally worded that way to avoid any military connection.
