I always went with the cartoon continuity for the reasoning for him being created.
Made no sense that comic CC, who was supposed to be SMART, would basically OK Mindbender to create the perfect Cobra leader. That's basically tossing his own job away. He really should have been more Cobra's Captain America or Joe's Super Trooper than created from all the greatest military minds of yesteryear. Why would CC want somebody who is full of far superior leadership DNA than himself? |

Serpentor served the same purpose when I was a kid. That bright, garish armor and the flying chariot drew everyone's attention - Joes and Cobras alike - while Cobra Commander ran the show. |

I'm discovering how more sensible Sunbow is over the comic despite the comic being more serious or the cartoon's purpose to sell toys, correct me if I'm wrong

The only thing that bothered me in the TV show was how the Joe's became incompetent requiring the introduction of SGT Slaughter and plus the Fatal Fluffies.

Speaking of which, kudos to whomever on the IDW team decided to have CC doodle that image on the cover to #299. There were a lot of funny jokes on that cover, but that was the best one.

Serpentor has no faction, only followers. Let those who fear him, follow him. And those who oppose him, die!
Without Serpentor there's no Cobra! (Dr. Mindbender says in the animated movie and even though he joined Cobra before he created Serpentor, he probably really believes that.) Seriously, Hasbro seemed to have written him out around 1989 or so. His last commercial appearance was in 1988 when Destro breaks from Cobra to form his own army. There's a 1989 "Is this the end of Serpentor?" mail away offer where hooded Cobra Commander and Tomax and Xamot try to overthrow Serpentor. But Serpentor still appears in mail-away forms afterwards, without much "story" to them. And of course, Operation Dragonfire, where Cobra is winning and then CC becomes humanoid again, deposes Serpentor and then Cobra loses. But that's standard miniseries formula, Cobra is ahead and then loses everything. The Crimson Twins were utterly disloyal to CC in the toon. Vaguely loyal to the real Cobra Commander in the comics, they sided with Serpentor against the imposter Cobra Commander and later served under the real CC. And in the toys, it's not clear, besides that old mail away flyer. |

I wonder if CC's impression of Serpentor would have changed had Serpentor survived after fighting back against Fred.

I think the toy commercial summarizes Serpentor really well.
