The 1970s bulge is real. I'm another early 70s kid.
I'm kind of surprised how many people can remember their first figure bought. I have a few specific memories of figures bought/received over the course of the line, but mostly it's a blur. I started in 1983. With the Star Wars films wrapping up, I got the first wave(s) of Return of the Jedi, then kind of thought that's that. Looking for the next thing, I remember being attracted to Joes in part by the better articulation. And I remember being confused as to why a few of the figures I picked up didn't have the swivel arm. :P |

1972. I grew up as a Star Wars collector. In 1982 - between Empire and Jedi - GIJoe came out. We didn't get any GIJoe stuff for Christmas that year... but between Christmas and New Year's we went to Florida to see my Grandparents. My Mom didn't go. When we got home on New Years day, Mom had done more shopping and we all got one more gift. All GIJoe. I got Hawk with the MMS, my brother got the VAMP, and my sister got the HISS tank.
It wasn't until a couple years later when I got issue 31 of the comic. That's when I became hooked. 6th grade. Return of the Jedi was over... Star Wars was done. GIJoe became the new obsession. |

I was born in 84.
My toy addiction started when a kid brought the Real Ghostbusters Fright Features Egon to preschool. Had to have it. First figure wound up being Fright Features Peter, but we were down the rabbit hole from there. Ghostbusters and Batman were my big things for quite awhile. My first movie in theaters was Batman 89, so it made a huge impression. Then, of course, I was prime age for the Animated Series. My Joe fixation started around 92 or so. The Hall of Fame line really grabbed me - particularly HOF CC. I was familiar enough with Joe to need a CC with a removable hood. From there, I was all in. The Sunbow toon played every morning on the USA Cartoon Express before school, and the comics were still going at the time. My biggest problem was that I got into Joe so late that it felt like the line was off the shelves very shortly thereafter. That kinda fueled my obsession more, and, by the time 97 rolled around, I was ordering vintage from Figures Inc and making my parents take me to Toys R Us for the 15th Anniversary stuff.

My grandpa (WWII Battle of the Bulge veteran) got me breaker and ram Christmas 82. Was big into Star Wars until then completely changed my focus that year to joe. Had never heard of joe before then but never looked back afterwards. Spent time in the Marines because of my grandpa and Gi Joe. |

1971. My first ARAH was Grunt, followed by RnR and either SE or Flash, not 100% certain. I had adventure people and Star Wars figures, I thought 12 inch joe was cool, but they were more expensive and were not readily available from when I turned 6 and older.

I was born in the mid-90s. Which means I was the perfect age to catch GI Joe in reruns on cable, the perfect age to watch the Rhino DVDs and the perfect age for the underrated comic 3-packs and the GI Joe vs Cobra thru Valor vs Venom stuff.

I remember playing with a broken Wolverine and Cover Girl, which I think were my older brother's. I may have also inherited his Armadillo.
The first Joes I explicitly remember being handed to me mint-in-package were General Hawk and Sgt. Slaughter with the Triple T (said older brother had to put it together for me). I gradually received more and more Joes up until '92, when puberty took over. |

1978. The first Joe toys I had were hand me downs from an older neighbor. Cobra Fang, VAMP, Cobra Commander V1, Gung-Ho, Rock N' Roll and Ace.
The first new Joe toys I got were B.A.T.S., Hawk, Wet-Suit, Zandar, Zarana, Cobra Night Landing, Cobra Hydro-Sled and Dreadnock Swampfire at Christmas 1986. |
