I honestly can't remember where I first learned of the Oktober Guard as a kid (most likely the comic I suppose), but they have always held a certain fascination for me as the Soviet counterpart to the Joe team. Something about the Joes having opposite numbers just appealed to me as a kid, and still does.

I had issues 6 & 7 very early, and saw the Oktober Guard/Red Oktober episodes of the show as a kid. Of the two, unusually, the comics story tended to be the bigger influence on how I viewed the Guard. TBH, I like the Oktober Guard more in concept than execution, as beyond 1982, there never seemed to be enough of them to be a viable threat.

Lengthy rant above aside, I absolutely agree with this as a specific statement regarding the Guard. Particularly Daina and Wong are awful on the show. I like the crater base, and Stormavik's look is interesting, though not better than the comic look. Otherwise the comics versions are better. Quote:
I can't say I ever remember them from the cartoon. Hell, I barely remember them from the comics.
I had a Lanard figure when I was a kid that had a red star on his hat and I figured he was an October Guard guy. Got him in a flea market box of Joes in 87. Didn't realize until YESTERDAY that it said LANARD right on his damn leg and he's not even a Joe! We had Big Bear and Red Star growing up, but until we got the comics 3-pack Guard figures in 05 or 06, the rest of the Russian roster was filled out with Lanard Corps figures piled into a grey Corps Jeep. Brekhov was the Baron guy with the eyepatch. Quote:
*Actually, I'd still like to turn the black suited mail-away Big Bear figure into Ramius from the start of the movie by painting some gray in his beard. Quote:
I only watched the cartoon as a kid. I started getting into the comic around '91, but only for a couple of issues. I've recently read the entire Marvel series for the first time. That first story with the Oktober Guard is great, as is their final-ish story where most of them died.

I probably would have forgotten about them if it weren't for the Comic Book 3 Packs. It took me a few years to get a deal on the one with Horror Show.

Wasn't Red Star initially carded as a Cobra/Enemy in the original line too? Not sure if that was an error or Hasbro decided to make him a Joe instead after the initial first production run.

Ahhh, yes! And the front of his card was also originally like a Cobra where it was red instead of blue. Apparently the initial run did have the Cobra logo on the filecard and then the 2nd run had it covered with the Joe sticker but still had the red Cobra card on the front. The 3rd and final run had the blue colored cardfront and the Joe logo on the filecard.
And thus concludes today's Red Star history lesson! lol
