I'm curious how big of an impression the October Guard made on those of you who only watched the cartoon. What were your thoughts on them then and what are your thoughts on them now? Did you even remember them?

Big Bear was one of my favorite figures (top 3 when I was a kid). I only knew the dic series really until adulthood.
Didn't really know anything about them until ME stuff had them as gijcc stuff . Soooo not much here, I have since started reading comics and seen all of sunbow. |

I was a fan. I rather enjoyed the idea that an American military group and a Soviet military group could work together against common enemies. It definitely stood in stark contrast to films, like Rambo, where the Russians were just evil, brutal antagonists.

I always liked the idea of the Oktober Guard. With American and Russian elite squads working together when necessary.

I can't say I ever remember them from the cartoon. Hell, I barely remember them from the comics.
I had a Lanard figure when I was a kid that had a red star on his hat and I figured he was an October Guard guy. Got him in a flea market box of Joes in 87. Didn't realize until YESTERDAY that it said LANARD right on his damn leg and he's not even a Joe! |

Like most things, they were stupid in the cartoon and cool in the comics. Definitely need more of them, but I doubt Hasbro is going to churn out anything Russian-positive anytime soon lol. If I recall, one or two of them were Ukranian, so you never know...

Man, I would absolutely love to see a Classified Red Star and Big Bear! I don't think those 2 are out of the question at all though. Especially since Lenny said every ARAH figure is on the table for them to Classify.
I didn't read most of the Marvel run until years later and only had maybe 15 random issues as a kid, so they didn't have much of an impact on me back then. I honestly don't remember them in the cartoon, but I must have seen them because I watched every episode back then in the '80s. I got out of Joe in '89, so it was before Red Star and Big Bear made their action figure debuts. But I had the 25th/Modern figures and have since picked up the ARAH figures, so definitely learned to appreciate them more now.

Only two of them were actually Russian, from the core group... Stormavik and Dragonsky. Brekhov was Ukrainian, Schrage was East German, Daina was Czechoslovakian, and Horrorshow was Georgian.

Red Star was Ukrainian and Big Bear was Russian, correct?

I've liked the Oktober Guard since I was a kid in the early 80s and had Marvel #6. The Joe Con in NOLA in 2012 was a must attend for me to get the OG set.
