My questions are: How high-res is it actually? What does the material feel like (any flexibility or rigid like glass?) How durable is the surface finish (will the color scratch right off?) How color-fast is it (will the color bleed, transfer, or fade?) I'm willing to try it once but I don't have a lot of good insight on those points I listed above.

Curious to how your experiment goes.

It's an industrial printer that is part of the Shapeways stable of machines, not something I could ever own. It's a Mimaki 3DUJ-553 if you want to look at it though. I think they run somewhere around $200k but they are basically 3d inkjet printers. They can even print in clear (with or without pigment). Very cool stuff.

Well, my Amazon ODST drop pod order arrived today so I had to take a few pictures with theirs and mine. Fair warning, the filament I use for these desert ODTS's is stringy and it scars easily so these prints are not as clean as I would prefer them to be.
Anyway, here is the Jazwares ODST figure: Height comparison with MTF: And with Master Chief in the mix: Building a squad... Helmet comparison...Jazwares went pretty squatty on theirs: And here are some more shots of the latest revisions to my home-printed ODST armor. I realize the thigh armor is way too thick now. I wanted to thicken the walls up but I obviously took it too far. The 3d-printed replacement knees still work with the thigh armor in place but the range of motion at the hips suffers with the belt/thigh armor combination so far: And a few separate shots of the helmet and vest: And if you're wondering, yes the MTF figures fit in the drop pod:

That detail looks pretty small on that skirt pattern so I think I can get most (maybe all) of my texturing detail to show up. Even the denim pattern on the guy's shorts carries over pretty well in 4" scale.

Yeah that is pretty good detail, going to have to try a texture scan to get the colors and try it myself. Like a star wars head or something.
Loving your MTF armor - did you say you made a custom knee?

Thanks! Yeah, the knee pads on the fully armored figure in that photo series above are actually full replacement knee parts. I boil-and-popped the MTF knee pins out and swapped in custom knees. The design needs some fine tuning to prevent hyperextension of the knees but it's otherwise a beautiful fit.

I guess texture paint can only go so far. I have a lot of head models and textures from the civilization games that I may mess around with
Cool to see you did it. I cleaned up my knee scan using tinkercad to get uniform parts but haven'ttaken the step to make a custom knee yet, so this is inspiring Because of the ODST armor, I'm also thinking about trying to build a full torso piece that is compatible with MTF waists and arms, so I can just have the full detail as part of the figure itself. I imagine I could use a classic back screw to hold it all together. The idea for this is to basically turn the whole chest armor piece into a simple replacement torso. Crack open the MTF torso and swap all parts over to the 3d-printed one. Screw the 3d printed torso together, then use it like you would the original MTF torso. Getting a good fit with the MTF waist ball would be the only hard part. Anyway, I have big dreams in my head. We'll see how much of it gets done!

I'm getting dangerously close to buying my first full-color test print. I have some more color work to do, but the ODST parts' texture maps are basically final now and the parts are packed up for economical printing. My texture image gets exported from a Gimp file, which allows me to change color themes, logos, and text at will without having to start from scratch or do any touch-ups.
