Another thing that struck me is that Bruce Maddox has no extra heads (the only one this wave not to have any). Similarly, John Strong only has one extra head (and is only one of two with just one extra head). This is actually something on my mind with this line. Does the number of extra heads influence your purchase decision? And, if so, by how much? For me, there have definitely been figures that I've been on the fence about, where all the extra heads have swayed me to buying. Conversely, I find it easier to pass on borderline figures with few or no extra heads. Then as you said, the reason why someone like Bruce Maddox isn?t calling to me is because the package feels light without the value of extra heads to swap around for customs.

I think there was something on Facebook about a kickstarter or BBTS crowd fund just for the female figures.
I'm hoping we unlock a few different figures. It would be nice to have enough parts to mix and match to create female characters for all different lines. It would be great to get a Agent Harker, Keiko Savitar, Canary or Agent Tarantula.

Unique extra heads are a factor for me, yes.

I end up ordering a figure for every head. It’s expensive but they’re just too cool to pass on.

A while back, Bill was posting in-progress card art for alternate head packouts of some of the 40th figures. So, for example, Count Ironmoon with a werewolf head and Kiloworg with Red Shadow head. His plan was to release them as FMF store exclusives.
I don't think that's the plan anymore, sadly. I went back to try and find the IG posts with the artwork and it looks like he deleted them all. |

Those are the packouts shown on the BBTS listings.

The extra heads are usually the pass / fail for any of the figures that I am on the fence about ordering. For this newest wave, I really liked the base figure for Jet Powers but what made him my top pick after Wild Bill are the extra heads that he comes with. He gives me potentially four unique figures when I start popping those heads on fodder bodies.
Then as you said, the reason why someone like Bruce Maddox isn?t calling to me is because the package feels light without the value of extra heads to swap around for customs. There's a subconscious level. If you had asked me off the top of my head which figures had the most heads, I'm not sure I could of told you. Yet, the two I was most drawn to were Jet Powers and General Brown, which looking at the list are the only ones with four heads. The funny thing is I'm not all that interested in the helmeted and henchman extra heads. But I do like stockpiling heads (never know when you might want them). And I suppose it just feels like better value. I do hesitate though to put it in value terms. I know we're getting "spoiled" on some of these having so many heads, and maybe it's unfair to expect them all to have them. I do want to ask Bill sometime about the calculation on these. Is there a cost balancing at play? Like do some figures need to have few or no extra heads to balance out the ones having four heads? Or does it really just come to what makes sense to him from a character/story perspective? Like Bruce Maddox I gather is a singular Adventure Force character. And maybe he doesn't seem army-builder-able so no extra heads. But the reality is not everyone can buy all the figures, so figures are being weighed against one another. And extra heads are a conscious factor. Since the line has developed a reputation I think for extra heads, ought there be a minimum standard (like at least one extra head). I am also curious to ask Bill specifically about the costs of heads. He has said that all the extra hands are because of the marginal cost to adding them as they are tooled up. So, I'm curious to what extent that is or isn't true for already tooled extra heads. Besides being more plastic and paint, I'd imagine that painting heads would have a higher complexity and cost. |

What I mean by "packout" is which head is physically on the figure in the packaging -- plugged onto the neck. The Count Ironmoon from BBTS will come with the human head placed on the body and card art depicting a human head. The planned FMF version would have the wolf head on the figure in the packaging and variant card art showing a wolf head and hands on the character. They would have all come with the same variety of heads, but they would be packed differently.
Hopefully that is a more clear explanation. It doesn't look like it's going to happen, in any case. Although maybe he deleted the images because he didn't want to ruin the surprise. So, you're saying Bill was thinking about having the factory swap the head on the figure with one of the extra heads for some of the supply going to him. That sounds like the kind of outside the box idea Bill would come up with to drive some traffic to his site shop. That'd be a kind of fun little twist I suppose, though I wonder if it'd be worth the hassle of it to the factory (remembering to do it, being sure to keep his supply separate from BBTS). It'd only be of interest to MOC collectors, so we're talking a niche within an already niche line. Anyone here a MOC collector on these? Would be curious to see some photos of them all displayed MOC. |

Okay, so you're just talking packaging variations. I'm reminded of Hasbro's Marvel Universe toyline. Sometimes, they would simultaneously release the same figure packed two ways. You'd have the standard upright pose and an inverted hanging down pose where appropriate to the character (Beast, Spider-Man).

I most wanted to get the Crimson Moon Legionaire with the human head card art. The BBTS version will have the stovepipe head on the card art. Wish he didn't delete those images, so I could show what I'm talking about. I feel like I'm saying "card art" too much. It's losing all meaning. Last edited by SmokePants; 09-26-2022 at 02:55 AM.. |
