Now that Classified is a bona fide, breakout success, I can't help but think the comics are due for a similar reboot to better tie them in with the new product. With nothing but the utmost respect and admiration for Larry and his innumerable contributions to the Joe-verse, perhaps it is time to restart from square one. I think some fresh takes on our old favorites (and maybe even some new characters), told with modern storytelling sensibilities, could be very interesting and breathe some new life into the concept.

I still don't understand why people think Hama's comic has to die in order for a restart to happen.
Just start your reboot/refresh/reimagining alongside the Hama comic and let those of us who still want Hama comics have our Hama comics. That worked out pretty well for Mike Costa a few years back. Nothing stopping somebody from doing it again.

I love the Hama run and consider it the only true canon.
Having said that, it was already hard to suspend disbelief back in the mid 90s that these were a bunch of Vietnam vets running around. Now in 2022, it's just downright ludicrous. These guys would all be about 75-85 years old now. I agree that starting from scratch and setting up a new continuity for Classified would be better than continuing the story of the octogenarians. Then again, every time anyone has tried to re-do or re-tell ARAH it's been a complete flop. IDW and DDP tried several times...there was GI Joe Reloaded, Rise of Cobra, Renegades, Sigma Six, Resolute...all of them just retreading the same old stories. Stray too far, and it's a disaster like Rise of Cobra. Don't change anything, and it's boring and stale. Where's the middle ground? |

Nothing stopping somebody from doing it again. I am a lapsed Joe fan who was absolutely drawn back in by the new figures, and would love to read some Joe comics, but the Hamaverse feels as daunting to get into as Star Wars Legends continuity was. Ideally, we could both get what we want. I'm curious what everyone here thinks is greater: the number of potential new readers a reboot might attract, or the number of Hama die-hards a reboot would lose? Agreed. I tend to consider the Marvel continuity to be more canon, though, as a lot of his IDW stuff is a bit naff.

I just wonder if there is 1) the audience to support two separate continuities, and 2) a willingness on Hasbro's part to have two completely different versions of the brand existing simultaneously ... I'm curious what everyone here thinks is greater: the number of potential new readers a reboot might attract, or the number of Hama die-hards a reboot would lose?
2) Doesn't sound like it. 3) Though impossible to predict, the potential payoff of a successful reboot is definitely worth the risk. Even though, personally speaking, I have complete confidence Hama is "up to the task", and hasn't suffered any significant cognitive decline at all. BTW, on an unrelated note, I wonder if Mr Hama will be attending the NYCC in October? Because if he is selling signed drawings, I'll say: "I would like you to draw a clock for me. First, put in all the numbers where they go." And when that is completed, I'll say: "Now, set the hands to 10 past 11." I hope he won't be offended. 2015 is when IDW's original Joe continuity started falling off everything leading up to 2015 was moderately successful. As for DDP their continuation of Hama's work was fairly successful and helped to restore faith in the brand after Extreme. Even Reloaded was successful in the beginning it just started falling off around the end of its run. I'm not entirely sure why it started to dip in sales while still maintaining the critical praise it was getting. So it's possible to make a successful Joe book without Hama, it just takes good writing and a successful marketing strategy. I think trying to emulate the GI Joe Classified figure line could be the way to go.

In hindsight, I wonder how thing's would've panned out, for both IDW and DDP, if they had stuck to one non-Hama continuity. |

So I do believe the people saying Hasbro cares about there being only one comics continuity at a time are talking out of thier o-ring holes.
