They should have done the comic origin, with flashbacks to Vietnam (or, if they wanted to modernize it, the Iraq War). Show Snake Eyes going through the military with Stalker and Storm Shadow and then coming home to be told his family was killed. He then goes to Japan and finds Storm Shadow and SS introduces him to his uncles and gets him accepted into the clan, despite being gaijin. They train and Snake Eyes begins to eclipse SS in skill (except in archery, where SS remains supreme). Hard Master is showing SE secret skills one day and he's cut down by one of SS's arrows. SS flees the area and SE returns to the US, where he is met by Stalker and Hawk, who want to recruit him for a new special unit to combat this new foe called Cobra.
Mid credits, Storm Shadow meets with Cobra High Command and we see Destro and Baroness, with a man sitting on a throne shrouded in shadows. Storm Shadow pledges himself to Cobra and the Commander laughs. In the background, we see Zartan, the true assassin of Hard Master, watching. |

Goof balls playing masked characters, but they gotta be unmasked and they just look like goof balls.
The only reason to adapt Snake Eyes is if you are going to do the story Hama came up with. Otherwise, enough. But at this point, the Snake Eyes name may be damaged for theater level projects. I suppose I should finally make a go to watch all of Snake Eyes, just so I can say I've seen the unholy trilogy of Joe live action movies. |

I need to rewatch Scott Adkins "Ninja", but I remember it having better "Snake Eyes energy" than any of the 3 Joe movies so far... kind of a mix of the Arashikage storyline with a dash of "Enter the Ninja" and the Eric van Lustbader books.
The only difference being that the evil Japanese ninja didn't hate the Caucasian intruder like in most of these stories. In GI Joe, they were buddies that grew apart over a misunderstanding. Ninja is good, a bit paint by numbers but good, I love me some Mika Hiiji. Ninja 2 is even better. |

I think the problem is that the movies don't embrace their toy origins ala Transformers and yet also don't want to embrace the fairly serious origins of the comics.
Then you probably have a whole host of other stuff they may not want to deal with ie Snake-Eyes the "White Savior" archetype, Cobra commander being you know - a guy in a frigging hood who is some nobody backwoods terrorist, etc. Plus I'm not sure how the property is viewed by the masses. Is GI Joe still seen almost exclusively as "that cartoon with the hot European villain in glasses every boy in the 80s had a crush on, the goofy villain in the helmet who screams in a funny voice, silly lasers, Knowing is Half the Battle, and Snake-Eyes"? Don't think it would be hard to have a serious movie about Nameless, Tommy, and Lonzo in a war overseas contrasted with a failed car salesman in America disillusioned with everything, and culminating in the fateful day the families collided on a road. Probably not happening when the moron producer is too worried about Cobra Commander having a hood instead of understanding the frigging source material. |

Biggest fault of the movie was making a beloved character like Snake eyes a jerk. You can't undo that with better fight choreography, more elaborate set dressing or inventive CGI. They simply killed all enthusiasm for me by doing what I didn't think was possible by making me root for Cobra!

I think they would modernize it to something like Afghanistan or Iraq given that they'd want a modern GI Joe film to take place in modern times. The Punisher Netflix series change the Punisher's service record from serving in Vietnam to serving in Afghanistan. So I could see them doing likewise for Snake Eyes, Storm Shadow, and Stalker. If they chose to go with a more faithful origin next time.

What a bizarre take on Snake-Eyes. They made him a Zartan-esque guy. |
