I'm just making a semi educated guess (no one here will really know unless IDW has commented on it), but I'd wager that the license was up for renewal at a point where the toy line was hot but the comics were stagnant, and Robert Kirkman was able to make a way better offer than IDW could afford. That and Hasbro probably wanted a fresh start to go along with their multi year revival of Joe.

I'd also add, they crapped the bed with the Hasbroverse shenanigans, though I'm not sure if that was a Hasbro or IDW initiative. |

I'm betting more of that lies on Hasbro than IDW....there's been a lot of rumor-reporting on Hasbro trying to make a "Hasbroverse" for years now, both in film and in comics. There's at least one piece of physical evidence that it's something that's definitely been on their mind for over a decade at least (The "Unit-E" comic that was handed out at SDCC 2011).

Hasbroverse is a stupid idea, there's too many clashing toylines that just don't work together.

One good thing to come out of the Hasbroverse were the Hasbro Heroes Sourcebook bios for Zandar & Zarana.
(Yes, I know... but I really enjoy talking about these characters, and I lament they're not paired together more often.)

Lol. Yes, you do talk about them endlessly. But I tend to talk about Cobra Commander a bit too much. I think he could be a really great villain if he was written better. Of course I might say the same about others, like Destro, Zartan, Firefly, etc.

I think Hama writes him pretty well. All of them, in fact. Maybe not Firefly, so much, since Hama elected to turn him into a member of the Arashikage. The only part of the Hamaverse version of Cobra Commander I didn't like is when he attempted to quit and was shot by Fred VII. But, when he returned, he was more ruthless than ever, so that was good.

I think it's likely a combination of a few things
IDW Side IDW has had the licence since 2009 (so 14 years). It is generally easier to create a new buzz about something new rather than just continuing on with the same status quo. GI Joe sales are comparatively low (though I understand better more recently). Beyond the main ARAH book other Joe titles have been sporadic. The IDW-verse fizzled out after a very strong start. The external The other bidders for the license may have had a very strong pitch. If say Robert Kirkman made a pitch saying that he had the pedigree of Walking Dead and Invinxible behind him and wanted to relaunch GI Joe and make it the most successful book on the market, and maybe also link to some of the multimedia successes those brands have had... that could be quite compelling. |
