Good points. Sommers probably sounded like a good fit at the time. The Mummy was filled with cartoony action and made for a good popcorn movie. No doubt they hoped for more of the same, and were hoping to ride the hype train from the Transformers movies.

That is true. Tim Burton admitted to never reading a Batman comic yet his Batman films are beloved by fans. I always have Travis Knight in the back of my head when I think of what it takes to make a good adaptation of a beloved property. Knight was a fan of the Transformers comics, cartoons, and collectibles, while Michael Bay thought the comics and cartoons were stupid.

Undoubtedly that also played into the mindset of having Michael Bay direct Transformers movies.

Yeah. 13 Hours was actually one of his better movies and it sounds like he's figured out how to direct movies because I've heard Ambulance is pretty good.

Setting the back drop in space, opens the door to so many possibilities. Things that seem far out there or unrealistic are easier to swallow with a sci-fi interwoven into the story and setting, rather than just placing the Joes in a straight up real world best of the best almost super heroes kind of setting.
The Joes were already firing laser weapons in the 80s. There's nothing new there that hasn't already been done. The creations and designs on the type of out of this world kind of equipment that Destro is behind, seem (to me) better fit in a more sci-fi setting. There's always going to be fans who want their Joes sweating in their fatigues and rucksacks in some jungle in the setting of a world war. And don't like the sci-fi elements of it. That's fine. But the sci-fi element has always been there. (Cobra La, Space Marines, Serpentor, BATS, Zartan's abilities, etc). But the real world kind of stuff doesn't work and there needs to be something different. Sci-fi is appealing to kids and adults alike and gives Hasbro a bigger sandbox to play in and more elements to work with.

ARAH in '82 was styled as the military of the near future. The Hasbro designers visited the U.S. military's R&D facilities to get ideas. This is my ideal version of G.I. Joe.
The space stuff I'm not so crazy about, but I'd take it over the supernatural (including ninja hocus-pocus) any day. |

I'd say '83 because that's when we got our first Cobra vehicles. The H.I.S.S. Tank and S.N.A.K.E. Battle Armor were pretty out there in terms of design. Eventually, that aesthetic would bleed over onto the Joe's side.

It was also the year Destro was released in the line.
