Can we take a moment to acknowledge how awesome it was? Two warriors of different cultures having mutual respect for one another despite being mortal enemies. First seen in the "Revenge of Cobra" mini series when Spirit saves them both from suffocating and in return Storm Shadow willingly gives him the piece to the Weather Dominator. Granted he is later seen breaking into Joe HQ to retrieve the piece, but at least he was nice enough to let Spirit have it temporarily.
Either way I thought the rivalry between the two was one of the best aspects of the show even if we only saw it a handful of times. Yes yes I know it's usually Snake Eyes VS Storm Shadow everybody talks about, but we are specifically talking about the Sunbow animation here. |

I just watched Countdown for Zartan yesterday, the Dreadkoks are precented as having no redeeming qualities, while Storm Shadow stops them from torturing both Spirit and Doctor Emil Mettier with the laughing gas. One thing this episode does well is Storm Shwdow's final scene is as Cobra HQ is ablaze, saying, there will be another time, Spirit, the logic being the kid has those figures and can pick up playing after the episode ended.
In Revenge of Cobra, they both wisely stop fighting to pounder a means of excape from that underground entrapment they found themselves in. Storm Shadoe does return the favor during the battle on the roof of the world. I do recall Storm Shadow being much petulant in Satellite Down, whining about a broken weapon and also needlessly attacking Primords, even children. This is probably the most unlikable you'll see Storm Shadow in Sunbow. It'd have been interesting to see Sunbow's version of Storm Shadow swapping sides come 88, but alsa. I do think Spirit is one of the strongest characters in GIJoe. Professional, a code, and always capable. |

I too agree that Spirit is one of the best characters in the show. Really want the Classified figure of him and Freedom along with V2 of Storm Shadow so I can reenact their battles. Last edited by Agent of Dohma; 08-02-2022 at 12:03 AM.. |

It didn't occur to me that's til that very moment, that's the reason for that cliffhanger, to get a child's imagination rolling what that next encounter will be. Very much a 'duh' moment for me in how the episode was designed.
Countdown for Zartan is a master class in getting you to care about owning figures: * Zartan: disguise, hates sunlight, camouflage ability, prefers dark combat where he has an advantage. Just goes straight down the list. *Lady Jaye: Better than anyone with javelins (Gung-Ho is pretty good at the beginning in his own right), leadership, cool under pressure leading the search operation for the bomb. * Doc: Quick on his feet in combat, throws the explosive back at the Cobra recruit, quickly removing the detonator. He can handle himself if things get harry in case a kid just dismissed him as the team doctor. * Gung-Ho: Tough guy, but also clever with the watch trick he plays on Zartan. His little psyop gives them just enough time to get that bomb disarmed. We also see for what little those Cobra recruits have learned, they aren't ready for changing combat conditions as opposed to Gung-Ho who is a wrecking crew in combat. * Dreadnoks: Destruction with their weapons and no concern for the lives of the prisoners or even Zartan, when it becomes apparent he's been captured, "Ah, that's horrible, who's gonna pay us?" Evil scum for children to collect. * Storm Shadow: For as impressive as the Dreadnoks where in their weapons demo, his feets destroying a tank are far more impressive, drives home the value of the Cobra ninja to own as an action figure, "a ninja is a weapon.' Might as well be speaking directly to a child with maybe just enough pocket money to buy a new Joe fig. His sense of honor creates a contrast for a child to explore himself. * Spirit: Never loses his cool and waits for the perfect chance to escape. We also see how the pet accessory acts as a wonderful combat companion for him, cutting off Storm Shadow's second shot at him, I believe. |

Always a favorite from the cartoon and was surprised they weren't really rivals in the comic. I thought it was just so perfect.

It was nice to see a different take on Storm Shadow than the comics had. I prefer the rivalry/friendship he has with Snake Eyes, but the cartoon rivalry with Spirit (and later Quick Kick) was also fun.

In the original cartoon, it definitely was Spirit that was Storm Shadow's rival, not Snake Eyes. Kind of makes for a more interesting rivalry, at least in my opinion. Spirit and Storm Shadow being able to converse.

As far as the Spirit vs Storm Shadow thing, I definitely prefer it to Snake Eyes vs Storm Shadow, for several reasons. 1: The different fighting styles. Especially in Revenge of Cobra, but also Countdown for Zartan IIRC, you can tell that Spirit is fighting using a very western style, while Storm Shadow's style is decidedly eastern martial arts. But GI Joe shows them as evenly matched, simply using contrasting approaches. Great stuff. In the comics, Snake Eyes and SS pretty much use identical and ever more ridiculous ninja methods, which isn't nearly as interesting. 2: Snake Eyes and SS have basically one or two real fights before Storm Shadow spills his plan to track down Hard-Master's killer, and then they're buddies for the remainder of the run. In the show, Storm Shadow has his code, but he never goes good, so Spirit and Storm Shadow's clashes can continue, like Dust-Viper mentioned. Storm Shadow is conflicted enough to make him interesting, but he's still bad. |

As others have said, the conflict between SS and SE was never very meaningful and didn't last long at all. They were allies for most of the run. I don't understand why it's made a big deal out of.
SE vs Spirit is the well-loved classic. It also would have been a much better O-ring 2-pack than a version of Snake Eyes that never even encountered Storm Shadow. I think what made this rivalry special is that it was clear that they were enemies out of loyalty to their respective factions and not specifically any issue with each other. It's too bad DIC didn't focus on their relationship at all once Storm Shadow switched sides. |

DIC didn't focus on much of anything. Been watching episodes and characters are paper thin. LOL
