Wait no longer!!!
Despite his malformed arms and bulky legs and leg gear, Classified Beachhead has shown me the new path forward (with a little help from endless photos on the interwebs, Stalker studies, and Covid whisperings). Viva le beret! Waiting to place Marauders order for 10 more, once you all figure out the official Joe color (hint: Classified Beachhead). AWOL, better get your order in bfore I clean them out... 2022-07-29_11-13-03 by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr |

Seriously, I think Snake Eyes could rock the beret from a graphic/visual standpoint.
Also, no disrespect to the US military and its real world use of the beret. It has historic legacy and looks sharp in the right situations and dress combos, but seems out of place in this century with combat gear, or even normal patrol--and that's the way 99.1% of Joes are styled. And I also acknowledge the Joeverse is different with so many characters sporting the beret flawlessly (but along with the 'stache, might be where Joes are hindered from reboot compared to other properties being revived today). My issue is that if the situation allows you to sport the beret, you'll should take the balaclava off. If the situation is the opposite, wrap that beret up and maybe tie it to your shoulder gear. My other issue is that photos of Beret Beachhead are continuing to flood the interwebs, like everyone's running with this idea. Also...Covid, so apologies if this is all out of character for me... It should be noted, ozzie92 recently and expertly demonstrated the exception to the beret+mask/balaclava rule--which rightfully delayed this rant for a good while. Seriously, this shut me up good... https://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-j...ml#post5544854 |

Some berets have been used for evil.

-Tan berets were only introduced in 2001, when the Army higher ups decided to make the black beret standard for all--previously and somewhat unofficially reserved for rangers. Stalker and his classic OG look (as well as all four ARAH versions) predate that change. Personally I was only made awarenof the ranger tan beret when Patrick Tillman died in 2004, and only/barely getting back into Joes. -The 75th Ranger Regiment--modern rangers as we know them today--wasn't designated until 1986, though the formation began in 1974. Not really sure if the Hasbro designers and Larry Hama were keenly aware of the ranger evolution at that post Vietnam War era (someone can ask them)--more likely they were informed//inspired by previous interpretations of rangers prior to the eighties, which.... -prior to WWII, there hadn't been US Army rangers for more than half a century. New Ranger units, more in line with the modern elite army ranger (but not offiicial modern 75th Regiment) were formed at this time, and would generally continue throught the Korean War. Though the ranger of this time may have inspired//informed the Stalker figure and character, then main source is likely later, when Stalker was imagined to have served... -The Vietnam War saw new "Ranger" units evolve from LRRP to LRP to companies officially "re-flagged" as "Ranger companies" in 1969. The Ranger units were actually deactivated in 1972 with the end of the war, but when the new Ranger Battalions (that would become the 75th Ranger Regiment) were formed in 1974, the colors and lineage of this were passed on. -Based on Mr Hama's writings (comics and file cards), Stalker was LRRP--essentially a Ranger for that time period. On a sidenote, both Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow are also Rangers, but I guess Ninjas and Commandos and Ninja Commandos are a different MOS (and pay grade?). -The black beret was worn by rangers (as well as reconnaissance and armored units) in the 1960s an 1970s. In 1975, it was OFFICIALLY authorized for wear by the new ranger battalions being formed for the 75tn Ranger Regiment--up until 2001. So whether Stalker was or was not imagined as part of these newer Ranger battalions (he alternately may have been forming the Joe unit with Hawk), he would have worn a black beret to be more real world accurate--and the real world accurate bits whenever possible are a big part of GI Joe's strength to me. In my mind, I thought the original Joe designers ended up going with a green beret for Stalker simply because it looked and matched better than a black beret, especially with Lonzo already having black hair, and that a black beret would look... off. To prove a point, I put together the group photo below... 20220814_021901 (1) by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr ...and my initial point was obliterated. Stalker looks GREAT with an historically accurate black beret, on various iterations of the figure. Also, I had forgotten that the 50th/POC Stalker was switched from green to black. Further digging showed that Hisstank member Kwinn Lives had already done this switch on the vintage figure, prior to his custom postings here, at JoeCustoms.com https://www.joecustoms.com/customs/c...S&page=2&uid=7. I painted the berets on these figures black with idea that I was going to change ithem back to green after the photo (rubbing alcohol, the magic eraser). I've changed my mind, and will keep them this way. It resonates stronger within me, without being that far off from the original, and feels right. In a larger Joe context, in my mind the question of Flint's correct/accurate beret color now bothers me. But that deep dive is for another time (well basically when I submit this post), and for another thread (1983-????). For now, I leave you with the basic initial idea that Stalker and Flint got their berets switched up--by the colorist, paint master, gear department, or both... 20220819_024226 by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr 20220819_021949 by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr |

Thanks. I am aware of the CURRENT distinct colors of the US Army, but I have been doing more through online research now during my beret month. Some other abbreviated notes on rangers, berets, ranger berets, and Stalker are below [can skip stuff in italics/colors to get to main main thought/point]:
Did we ever decide collectively on an official beret color for GI Joe? I love the idea that the Joes would be a special unit with their own beret color. |
