I don't want to bash Lenny, as he doesn't deserve it; he's a great designer, he's affable and informative and funny in the livestreans, plus he has a furry face!
Just wish Zarana & Zandar's torn shirt/scarf abd twin thing mattered more to Hasbro than it does.

It's probably because of the era the Hasbro G.I. Joe team is from. Lenny definitely, and probably a lot of the other members, grew up in the 80s, with the ARAH toys, Sunbow cartoon, and Marvel comics and Zandar wasn't a huge part of any of that. I mean, that whole thing with them having their own language I've seen you mention before... I never heard of that. It wasn't in Sunbow or Marvel or the file cards of the ARAH toys (where did you see that information, by the way?). Hell, the ARAH file cards for Zarana and Zandar don't even mention that they are twins, just that they are Zartan's siblings.

Their private twin language was mentioned in Hasbro Heroes Sourcebook #3. That they're twins was an obscure detail I've spent many years making people, professionals and fans alike, aware of so that it isn't lost in official material. It's been mentioned several times as far back as 1986, in the young adult novel Invisibility Island, and as recently as 2021, in ARAH #283. They're definitely twins.

I was only referring to the language. I'm aware that they being twins has been a thing for a while. It sounds like the language thing was just created to pad out their information a bit, since Zandar wasn't used much in the comics or the cartoon, prior to the writing of the Sourcebook in 2017, so there wasn't a whole hell of a lot to say about him.

I wish Hama had written Zandar with the same enthusiasm as he did Zartan and Zarana. Developing Zarana & Zandar together instead of the twins detail being all but buried and having to fight for it for years.
Then DDP might have given us a matching Zarana & Zandar and focused on them as twins, instead of actively discouraging the notion, and removing just about everything visual that made Zandar & Zarana matching, including everything punk about Zandar. Many years pass, in which Zarana is released in figure form without Zandar, and filecards that superglue her to Zartan and don't mention her twin at all. Zandar gets a release, without his twin sister and no mention of her. IDW--Zarana superglued to Zartan, and no Zandar anywhere... until ARAH #283, when they're seen together and confirmed as twins!!! Also confirmed and developed as twins in the Hasbro Heroes Scourcebook #3! YES!! Classified, a new era for GI Joe. A new era for Zarana & Zandar!! Finally!! Zartan, Zarana and...!! No Zandar, and no mention he's Zarana's twin. Why do I bother?

No one in an official capacity seems to want to develop Zarana & Zandar's eerie twinship. I wish I could do it officially and come up with something accepted as definitive. No one else wants to who is in a position to do so.
I don't even care about money. I'd donate it to charity or give it away or something.

Having just flipped through the Hasbro Heroes Sourcebook, there isn't even a mention of Zandar and Zarana being related to Zartan. Is that still true in the IDW canon? It honestly sounds like the IDW version of them is significantly different than the original Marvel/Sunbow version. It also seems strange that Hasbro uses the IDW artwork of Zarana on the G.I. Joe website, so maybe they plan to retain the IDW background for her and Zandar?
EDIT: Then again, Hasbro seems to be taking art from every source for the character profiles... there is some original card art from ARAH and Operation: Blackout art, as well. Last edited by DarkLordMordred; 07-18-2022 at 09:38 AM.. |
