Was the Springfield, VA TRU always in the same place? The one closest to the mall (as opposed to the one in Kingstowne/Alexandria)? I did alot of my Real American Heroes collection shopping there in 2000-2002.

Yeah, the TRU we went to was close to Springfield Mall. I forgot what year it finally closed.

My recollection is that Service Merchandise prices were on the high side for G.I. Joe, so I didn't get much there. However, that did sometimes make it possible to find figures there that were sold out everywhere else. I'm pretty sure my original Storm Shadow came from there.
Service Merchandise was also known for their jewelry section, which I believe is why they adopted the showroom and conveyor belt system, because they didn't want all that merchandise out on the floor where it could get shoplifted. I remember there was a FLAGG displayed at the local Bergner's(bought out by Carson Pirie Scott later). I was quite enthralled by that display. Ace Hardware here also used to have a toy department.

We used to go to service merchandise all the time. Remember the layout of that store like the back of my hand. Was right near lionel playworld. The one-two punch of places to score some joes on our trip

I hope so, because I'll be able to easily skip those figures and save money.

I remember a bunch of Star Wars Star Destroyer playsets stacked on top of the beer coolers at a grocery store called Harmons one Christmas. A buncha 5 and 6 year olds standing there in the beer aisle like it was the toy aisle...lol
I think I only saw one boxed Flagg ever and that was at a weird place called LaBelle's (IIRC...it later became BEST) which had a showroom of stuff you could "order" and then they sent it out of warehouse in back on a conveyer belt while you waited. Even as a kid I thought that was a goofy way of doing things. Why pay a bunch of people to run around a warehouse pulling orders for customers 20 feet away, when you can just stack it and let the customers grab it themselves? They must've really been paranoid about theft. |

Yup. We had Best in Northern VA. You would order from this big ass catalog, they gave you a ticket, then the item would come off a conveyor belt. On a side note, my Dad would find a lot of the hot ticket toys at a store called Zayre. It was like KMart or Target. Nobody would think to buy toys there but he bought us all of Transformers G1 there for Christmas/birthdays back when Transformers were hard to find that one Christmas. We also got our Joes from Zayre and later at a store called Bradley?s. Damn, I miss the 80s.

Small world. I can't remember when it closed either. I do vividly remember getting the MOBAT there in 2000. Back during the early 2000s over my college breaks I would go Joe hunting to all the TRUs in NOVA...I miss those days.
