when dic first took over it was fine. when they dropped the budget like they did many of their cartoons it got bad.
operation dragonfire put python patron, slaughters marauders, ecowarriors, def, and sky patrol on tv. all of which were awesome. there are goofy episodes of the sunbow run. the viper. snake eyes as the karma chameleon. anyway, there wasnt money for comic books in my house. so, i got the cartoons. which were free. and they were awesome. having gone back and read some comics: holy shit military stuff is fucking boring. but, my favorite comics from the entirety of gijoe comics is the miniseries when chuckles kills cobra commander. (christ, i cant imagine what it would be like to get comics at the price today, back then. it was a BIG deal to get a superman comic from the gas station down the street on the super of rarest occasion, and they were .75 cents. not sure how i could have toys but not comics but whatever. im not even mad. id rather have toys than comics.) |

oh also, douche falcon? hello, snake eyes is a mute and does whatever he wants. no one in the military is going to learn sign language to give someone a command or take a command. he's literally the worst person on the team.
there are tons of cocky soldiers in our armed forces. |

As a kid I didn't even notice the drop in quality. I took the comic as the serious Joe version (well, until CC returned and it became relabeled SNAKE-EYES) and the cartoon as goofy Saturday Morning version. Same way I saw TMNT between comics and cartoon.
Enjoyed both for what they were. |

same. i didnt notice until i watched the dic seasons on crackle. you see the same drop in production quality on other dic shows from the time - slimer and the real ghostbusters being one of them.
which is sad, because ghostbusters was dic from the start, and the first couple of seasons were amazingly animated. |

I voted for the Marvel comic series mostly for it being a consistent source for the GIJoe storyline, which is just the nature of the industry: comics vs cartoons. The comic came first, then the mini-series cartoon, which was awesome as a kid, but that quickly faded out in 5 days (not counting re-runs), thus it was back to the comics.
As most old school fans have already pointed out, really you've got to take them both. Actually, it was like the toy line, comics, and cartoon were three parts of the bigger picture. I have mentioned this many times on various forum threads, but I love how the cartoons introduced certain new characters before they were released as toys. I was not a member of the GIJoe fan club as a kid, so I had no preview knowledge of Duke until he just showed up in the first mini-series. Same thing with Flint and Lady Jaye, who both seemed like really strong characters, which played a huge part in why they were (and still are) my two favorite Joes. But without the comics, we would never have had such characters as the Oktober Guard or the White Clown, but on the flip side the cartoon did give us a couple of cool characters such as Sparks and Big Lob. Marvel Issue 21 is probably my favorite issue because there's a best of both worlds with the comic following the established storyline, yet being drawn by one of the cartoon series artists. Jason |
