I'm not sure that book even exists. Hopefully, someone can post an image of it. |

In the cartoon? Duke, but I also think the show wasn't as good in Season 2 so that may have a lot to do with it. JMO, of course.
As far as figures and in my play, v1 Hawk and Duke were both characters I liked and enjoyed playing with. My Hawk always manned the MMS since I first got him, and relayed orders to Breaker for my Stalker to issue to my Zap, Grunt, R&R and Snake Eyes. It was 84 by the time I got Duke and my roster had grown by then. So he was kind of like Hawk's mobile eyes and ears in the field. Once I got the Machine Gun Defense unit and Watch Tower that changed my play up a bit. My Joes were more stationary when I set up to play. Hawk, R&R, Breaker and Tripwire would man my makeshift field station consisting of the MMS, MGDU, and WT. While Duke would ride shotgun with Clutch with Zap on the back being in charge of the forward operations. Stalker would still lead the team of Snake Eyes and Grunt on scouting missions on foot. Then if they got into trouble The Vamp could head their way to bail them out. Hawk, Duke and Stalker were all leaders in my Joe team, but at different levels and they each had their own jobs.

For me, the two were never really in competition. Hawk was the general, Duke was the first seargeant. Duke might take point on missions in the field, but at the end of the day, it's Hawk who's in command.

Goodreads, Amazon, and Paper Back Swap have entries for it. There are reviews for it on Good Reads, I guess those reviews could be from people who read the individuals who read the 6 issues that make up An Act of Treason. I'm planning on just reading the issues because it seems next to impossible to find.
My guess is DDP planned to release the book, then canceled it for whatever reason. |

You might be right, which would really stink because I prefer trades to issues. Get a more complete story in one bite. That explains a lot. Maybe they planned on using that cover art for the Trade and have the title An Act of Treason at the bottom.

I also prefer trades, but I had to finish the story.

I've always been a big fan of Hawk, yet for the cartoon it worked having Duke as the leader.
I liked seeing Hawk added in 1986, but it felt odd because there had been no previous indication that Duke wasn't the top dog of the Joe team. Sure, there were the occasional "Generals" in the cartoon, but for day-to-day operations of the team, it was Duke. So to suddenly add Hawk to it all seemed out-of-place.

Duke has always been the Joe leader for me. He was the leader on the show during the time when it was watchable. I had the figure.
I guess Hawk in the comic made some fans, but on the cartoon, he was terrible. Bad voice. Bad episodes. Associated with the even worse Sgt. Slaughter (who literally yells every line). Came in at the same time as the hated Serpentor, when they minimized the role of Cobra Commander. Give me Duke any time and every time over those clowns. It also doesn't hurt that Duke episodes tended to feature Scarlett, who is my favorite Joe. |
