Everything because they can charge 400 bucks, Point to their costs and the aftermarket prices for a BMF and ppl keep paying it. As long as collectors will buy enough units it will keep working and Hasbro can raise prices with rising costs. The next 12 months will be a game of chicken between Hasbro and collectors.

First, disregarding the Disney Premium, you'd still be looking at $350 or so anyway. But just because they have the molds, doesn't mean the actual PRODUCTION is any cheaper. Keep in mind that $160 Millennium Falcon was $250 when it was produced in 2012, before Disney and most modern global issues occurred. That's an almost 40% increase in just FOUR years. Add another EIGHT to that! 1. The biggest issue (when this was made) was labor costs. Around a decade ago, the Chinese discovered the joys of "the middle class" and it caused a significant rise in labor costs. In 2012, Hasbro created new molds for its mid sized vehicles for Star Wars (like the evergreen Jedi Starfighter) because it was more cost effective than using the existing molds due the reduced labor and parts used in manufacturing. AFAIK, the BMF molds still reside in China because it would be cost prohibitive to move them to another country, and equally cost prohibitive to make NEW molds for that sort of release (more on that later). Around 2012 was when Hasbro became more proactive in sourcing out their lines, but most licensed stuff is still made in China who have the experience and logistics to handle pretty much any situation. That and I'm sure the licensor (in this case, Disney) have some claim to the molds (which is how Mattel was able to use Kenner molds in 2002 when they snagged the Batman license from Hasbro). The more complex the item is, the more people are involved in making it, which means it costs more in labor. The BMF had a complex deco, lots of pieces and 2 super articulated figures and accessories that all had to assembled and painted in a big ass box. There's a reason stuff of this complexity isn't produced for mass retail anymore. 2. Limited Production. This was a Disney Parks item that got sold through Target as part of a shared item deal, which was a big thing during the pandemic. But by being an exclusive, it was produced in lower numbers than a mass retail item. Last I knew, Hasbro's "production limit" was around 15,000 units. Lower production doesn't improve pricing. That's why the old Joe Club's figures were so expensive, they were typically produced in sub-10K numbers. The last BMF run wasn't produced anywhere near the volume of it was a decade ago. The lower a production run, typically the price is increased to compensate. 3. Shipping. The BMF was a big item, and that reflects in shipping. 4. Materials cost. They haven't been static and only gone up. It just cost "more" to buy the plastic to make this crap. Again, that's why you've seen Hasbro do things like reduce the complexity of Transformers since 2010, or in 2012, they made new mid-sized vehicles for Star Wars of the same stuff they had molds for because the lowered production costs justified the creation of new molds. You don't have to like it, you don't have to buy the product if you feel you aren't getting a fair value. But a LOT of the price increases are NOT happening just for the sake of it (at least not in the toy sector). Renting a shipping container used to cost around $200. Now it costs over 2,000! In about a year's time! Those costs have to be absorbed somewhere. In terms of Mattel, they are apparently managing their costs to keep this stuff affordable. But then again, you have their die cast ships running $6-7 and the new listings I posted show a buck increase across the board so it's not like they aren't passing along increasing costs either.

Yeah, I don't think many of us really understand how much costs in material, labor and transportation have increased. I also think we forget that companies have to make "extra" money where they can because they're gonna lose money elsewhere and it's all about balancing out those loses with wins. Like, if I were selling stuff on ebay, I wouldn't feel bad about making a ridiculous profit on some sales because I know I'm gonna lose money on others. Ideally you want everything to be profitable, but that's not how reality works.

And well, forgot a bunch of what I said about the 5? scale! Wrote that big spiel about how unlikely more stuff is and then?BAM. I didn?t even get to post this before seeing listings for more 5? stuff!
Apparently, you 5? fans have a version of the Armadillo transport on deck https://www.entertainmentearth.com/p...ehicle/mthhj55 And you also get a 5? styled iteration of the Star command base https://www.entertainmentearth.com/p...layset/mthjd33 Description makes it sound like it?s largely similar to the Imaginext Command base, but scaled and stylized to the 5? line. For us Hyperspeed fans, listings are up for a Zurg Mothership, retailing for double the current cost of the Hyperspeed Armadillo https://www.entertainmentearth.com/p...ership/mthhm23 Plus listings (and a dollar price increase) for the XL-09 and XL-14 No images for the new stuff, yet. That's pretty cool I'm glad thier are investing In the line beyond 1 wave Quote:
I (and others) have LONG said, justifiably, that Hasbro has long been putting a "collector premium" on a number of their product lines aimed to collectors. And that's in addition differences in production. Those items you refer to? They are targeting a more general audience than the Vintage X-Wing. They are being produced in larger numbers and being carried (actually in stores) in more easily visible venues.

Also, that Falcon was available for multiple days with a 20% off coupon, bringing the price down to $320.
