I wouldn't go quite as goofy as Rocketeer (Even though I love that movie, it rocks!). I'd push for more Raiders of the Lost Ark tone, where it's fun, but not quite as slapstick as say, Last Crusade.

As far as my own story idea goes, I'd start out pretty similar to MASS Device with Cobra; CC, Destro, Baroness, Cobra Troopers and Officers. Maybe Major Bludd. Somewhere along the way, I'd bring in characters like Firefly and Zartan as private contractors for specific Cobra Ops, but emphasize the idea that they're mercenaries working for money. That way, they wouldn't necessarily hang around Cobra when they aren't actively being paid.
I've never really read past the Serpentor arc in the DDP stuff, but yeah, there's a lot of great ideas in that run. It's been a long time, but I remember really liking the Serpentor/Coil story, the one where Flint and Baroness get captured by a third party, etc. The dialogue wasn't great, but then neither is Hama's. I think the problem with trying to make things totally serious is that it's easy to go overboard. I get why Eon doesn't want to do Roger Moore-style Bond films right now, but in trying to avoid that, the Craig films are all a joyless slog. Using the Bond analogy, I think the right tone for Joe is something along the lines of The Living Daylights or Goldeneye. Both have some serious moments, but aren't without humor. Problem is, that's a difficult balance to achieve. Also, using characters who are Tier 1 in roles that make absolutely no sense. BBQ is an army firefighter yet is going on night drops into enemy terroritory? I get they are all Joes but even they should be in their lanes otherwise there is no need to delineate what their MOS is. Just crazy and silly. Blowtorch? Isn't that really a WWII era weapon like they used in Japan? Maybe I'm wrong and they used them in Vietnam too. Also, no SJW stuff and at least try to make the ages somewhat realistic. I mean, the Rock played Roadblock in the movie and he was almost 50. There are no 50yo operators. Roadblock is probably about 24 years old based on his rank as that's the average. Nothing really changes in personality, etc., just makes slightly more sense. And please, for the love of Pete, no ninjas...Bring back Commando Snake Eyes!!!! Also, I'm all for updating to modern wars like Marvel did with the Iron man movie. In the comics Stark Enterprises was a defense contractor during the Korean War (1950-53) but the movie made him an OEF contractor. Overall, maybe the most accurate marvel movie except that Obadiah Stane was the owner of his own defense contractor and never worked for Stark, they were competitors. I just feel like the Joes could really experience a legit renaissance here depending on who gets the license. |

SS is a brat in this one. Jinx is a brat. Both characters were mishandled from what we actually have learned of them in other productions. SS was my biggest gripe about Resolute. He's just a selfish, whiny prick. I prefer Tommy. Dina Meyer is the second loveliest actress I've ever had the pleasure of looking in the eye and having a conversation with. Quote:

Remarkable films. I'll add to this his remake of The Wolfman. He built a world in that film that didn't get the deserved appreciation (just like he did in October Sky). Find a storyteller who can offer rich detail and immersion in the story and the "corniness" can be overlooked and the bygone era can seem dreamesque. That was a trick Spielberg had, so I think that they learned well from one another. I'm not sure Lucas got that. I look forward to JJ's Narnia film. Makes sense. Sean Connery went so far against type that I think they let him do anything he wanted. The results made for a fantastic movie and balanced the tone. Raiders had an edge because Indy had an edge. Last Crusade treated him as "Junior" which would be funny to see Duke being put in that position in the presence of Hawk, Joe Colton, and Flint or Scarlett. The MASS Device mini would fit in a world like Raiders or Temple of Doom.

I'm not saying total seriousness like Extraction or Blackhawk Down. But the tone could be more the last 3 Mission Impossible movies or something. Truth is kids aren't really reading the comics or buying the figures because they are too busy playing videos games. The vast majority of consumers are adults who grew up with the show but tastes haven't really matured beyond SE breakdancing, Yo Joe battlecry, or Cobra Commander managing a global terrorist organization being a dolt?

I do think that there's room for a less tongue-in-cheek take, as long as it still feels like GI Joe. The tone of the recent Mission Impossible films would be great, IMO. Quote:
You're right about Craig's films, which is a shame because he has a great laugh. He seems actually tickled by what makes him laugh, not faked for the role. The Brosnan films became too cheeky. Almost all of his remarks were one-liners and innuendo that he even seemed to begrudge. Dalton hit the right mix, for me. He was wry but could gut you with his grapefruit spoon and not get a drop on his cufflink.

Yeah, after Goldeneye, Brosnan films became much more uneven. Agreed on Dalton, both his films are among my favorite Bond movies. Really like the ice chase in Daylights and the stunt in Licence to Kill when he drives the semi on just the left side wheels to dodge the rocket. Crazy that they could find a stunt guy who could actually do that.

Renegades and Resolute re-cast the role well. They both seemed influenced by Mr. Latta's performance in ways that other voice actors didn't. |

You're probably right. I was thinking Steve Blum voiced CC in Resolute. |
