Yeah, I agree. It's a fun detail that helps flesh out the backstory to some underserved characters. Back when we were kids, there were all sorts of little things like that we assumed (like Zaranna wearing Viper pants) or inferred or just made up. I always thought the many cool sculpted details on the figures were a large part of what made us fall for this line. Like the coiled garrote and flares on Cobra's (Trooper) arms, Gung Ho's grenades on his leg and Scarlet's slingshot/etc. They knew we'd notice that stuff and it'd fire our imaginations.

The original paintings (featured on the 1986 Milton Bradley Live the Adventure board game and on several international carded figures) featured them without shoulder armor, and they shared the same Dragon tattoo on their upper left arms. Because none of the previous Dreadnoks sported such ink, it seemed that maybe it was a Dragon tattoo worn by all members of Zartan's family. That proved not to be the case, because when a different set of Hasbro designers created the 1993 Zartan (v.2) for the Ninja Force line, they did not think to give him the Dragon tattoo. For that reason, the Dragon tattoo became an element which only Zarana & Zandar shared on some of their original retailed artwork. When making action figures for either Zarana or Zandar, I hope that today's Hasbro designers find a way to include that Dragon tattoo, perhaps using a detachable piece of shoulder armor or some other means.

Well, you are in luck Dreadnok Twins, because the siblings Zarana & Zandar have shared an element which is unique to them and suggests a close bond.

That image really highlights the weirdness of the times too, in more ways than one. Not only is the character design just fuckin bonkers, but somehow in the face of growing Christian Conservative "Won't someone think of the children!" PC-culture, artwork featuring pokies was allowed on product aimed at children. haha

I swear when I was a kid(I had both Zandar and Zarana and they were favorites) I had heard that the scarf was originally part of Zarana's clothing. I don't remember where I heard this or from who, but it seems that was the lore even back in the '80s.
Another fun Zandar fact: He was mainly voiced by Peter Cullen in the Sunbow cartoon, the same actor who voiced Optimus Prime. |
