?The best we can do is give something a good shot and throw it out there, and see if it flies,? Hama said. ?I don?t write for the middle-aged male fanboy, nor did I write for the 9-year-old kid back in the day. I write for myself.?
Larry Hama, in a 2018 interview with the Washington Post. Not a huge surprise. There are some other takeaways in the article that made me smirk, so I thought I'd share the read. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/...d-her-creator/ |

So glad I didn't get back into those comics. That looks borderline laugh out loud silly. Snake Eyes lives on inside of token adversity girl.
I think Hama got too full of his own hype. Some of his original writing was fairly good, but it got hyped to near god-like status. When reading this interview I can almost hear the arrogance in his voice. Even with the line you quoted at the top. It's obvious you were writing for yourself, Larry. More correctly, you were writing to sell issues (and back in the day, toys) to keep your job. I don't understand the Hama hype. I think it was because he took a more 'military' approach to the stories to keep it rooted in some form of realism. But it's not even really well written from that stand point. It might have seemed that way when I was younger and the real world was unknown to me, but now his writing seems average at best, filled with attempts to push personal beliefs and agendas through his stories. |

My favorite quote:
"I'll keep doing it until they don't want me anymore," Hama said. "My mentor Wallace Wood told me back in 1972, 'Guys like us don't retire; we just drop dead at the drawing table.' " Last edited by AWOL; 01-19-2022 at 05:08 PM.. |

Brian Shearer tells a funny story (or two) about LH. They've worked together on numerous GI Joe issues. They've attended many of the same cons. They've had side by side booths. He says Hama never remembers who he is. That and this interview ... and some stories I've heard from other insiders ... are how I'll remember LH. |

The moment I lost all hope in the comic turning around was this:

Like the Lobster Roll nonsense in another issue, this issue literally was "Snake Eyes and Scarlett go on vacation and then the joes airlift an exact copy of the old Snake Eyes cabin into the same spot the destroyed cabin was in"
Because apparently Snake Eyes always needs to have a cabin in the woods for whatever reason. It was more of Hama being creatively bankrupt. |

I kind of like the idea that the team cared enough about SE to restore his home, assuming that this is his actual home and not his "summer getaway" home. But, from a creative standpoint, Hama is churning old waters. The cabin was destroyed and rebuilt within the first 25 issues. But, since he's only writing for himself, my interest in his ideas is dropping like a cannonball in a water balloon fight.

That? That was tame compared to all the dead coming back to life with little to no explanation. We got JOEs from Trucial Abysmia magically resurrected and the Oktober Guard (robots?) running amok with the 2 remaining living characters clueless. Also, except for Storm Shadow, none of the ninja are Asian! And, it only takes 3 years of training to become a Master! Only Luke Skywalker becoming a "Master Jedi" took less time... SMH!
