issue 274
Snaaaaaake Huuuuunt Part 9 of 10 The Immortal-led squad hears the paratrooper team blowing the blast doors just above them. They determine to split up to hold off three passageways. The lights go out. The Night Vipers and Night Creepers are arrogant. The paratrooper team is concerned. Snake-Eyes Sean is spotted in the dark. The Creepers attack him. In the dark, a wonderful scene as the Night-Vipers surround Obaake and go to "suppressed sound common mode." They can speak without being heard, a terrifying technological ability which is a newly revealed advantage of theirs. The large column of armored Cobra vehicles attacks. The Robot October Guard comes under fire and Daina is shot. Things look grim, then the Dreadnoks attack the division from behind. The Balloon van pulls a Waukesha terror attack on the Vipers in the streets. Streets full of reinforcement Cobra troops arrive as the Thunder Machine, Dreadnoks, and Balloon van Joes close ranks with the Robot Oktober Guard and begin to look for Cobra weaknesses. The sudden arrival of tail-end Hawk in his suburban signals the arrival of the short-bus-Joes. Laura has been shot in the shoulder, Night Creepers litter the ground. In a well-drawn full-page spread, the Siegies engage the paratrooper team. The ninja force reaches Sean and begins to see what is happening there. He is carrying Laura out while there are Siegies pursuing. The airborne team joins the "Arashikage and friends" with Sean as they come together to pinch out the final Guards. This expanded group heads back towards the hospital tunnel. Torpedo blows up the passageway behind them to slow pursuit. Cobra Troopers call for HEAT Vipers. The Commander and Mindbender are reached by Troopers. The Commander calls for more Siegies at the hospital, and heavy weapons Vipers downstairs in the community center. The Trooper relays that they have the Joes in the streets surrounded, which is accurate. Then the armored transports arrive with the buses, who are in turn surrounded again by another ring of the reserves which were just called for by The Commander. Mainframe in the command vehicle cannot reach the assembled team in the basement tunnel. The ninja / paratrooper force is surrounded on all sides and the Joes decide to push forward through the Siegies instead of retreating through the heavy weapons blockade. The Commander orders the explosives in the tunnel used. The "Checkov's Gun" of booby-traps, snares, and weapons emplacements hidden in the prison level "gauntlet" which were so heavily foreshadowed were never deployed. In the letters page a reader relates his experiences trying to gather the issues he missed out on.

issue 275
Snaaaaaake Huuuuunt Part 10 of 10 Okay I forgot this was a silent issue until this morning. And, all splash pages. So, it's a good opportunity to showcase Robert Atkins art, but already set up to have some storytelling shortcomings. Laura is injured on the ground. There is no visible facial trauma like we will later see scars from. The combined Arashikage & friends plus airborne assault team is escaping towards the hospital in the tunnel. Injured Cobra Commander pursues with Night Creepers, Vipers, Frag Vipers, Laser Vipers, Heat Vipers, and Night Vipers. The escape is going well. The Joes do a full frontal assault on The Commander's medical gurney while he and all the Vipers attack them. Buff Mindbender the former professional wrestler hides behind The Commander. Outside, the Joes untarp their heavy machinery. The buses are firing full auto out the windows. Duke and Hawk command from the rooftop of the SUV. Zartan weaves through the crowd. The MOBAT is on the street and off the trailer. Laura commands the Crimson Guard, whom The Commander has recently betrayed. Maybe these are a new Crimson Guard. The ninjas have run out of specialized Cobras and are now cutting through Troopers. Freefall pushes Milo out of the combat: "who the fuck are you, kid?" Mindbender is now pushing The Commander out of the hallway. Tunnel Rat is mildly wounded. Airborne and Torpedo lead the escape. The Crimson Guards fire on Laura as she throws a grenade at them. They are in the booby-trapped tunnel and the explosives in the ceiling are revealed as the grenade also drops. The escape team reaches the street. Duke and Hawk are taking fire. The streets are full of Troopers exclusively. The explosion in the tunnels sends HISS tanks and onlookers scattering above. This is how Laura got that scar. The lead SUV is exfiltrating with the ninjas on top of it. The airborne team mounts up on the Dreadnok bikes for escape. The Thunder Machine is also full of Joes. The buses are a cacophony of flying glass, screaming men, and a hail of bullet casings. I think Trip Wire is in his Fun + Play red uniform. Vipers have joined the Troopers as the buses plow through the crowds. Flash appears with his laser rifle. The October Guard robots escape in the Bongo van. As the battle ends, the Iron Grenadiers swoop down as air support for the escape. Zartan is enjoying himself. The iconic Springfield (a nice little town) sign makes an appearance. Mission complete. In the letters page, a fan asks if Ripcord and Zartan will have a chance to resolve the death of Candy. So I checked. Zartan is carrying Tunnel Rat. Buzzer has Torpedo. Torch has Muskrat. Ripper has either Freefall or Ripcord, I can't tell. Ripcord was a part of this team according to issue 273, but I can’t definitely identify him in the issue. ------- THESE ARE MY ORIGINAL COMMENTS FROM READING THIS ISSUE WHICH I'VE REPEATED HERE DUE TO THE OVERALL IMPORTANCE OF THIS ISSUE TO THE SERIES. LOVE IT OR HATE IT, THIS IS A MILESTONE ISSUE AND MAY WELL BE THE FINAL GIANT GIJOE VS COBRA BATTLE OF THE SERIES. ------- Final chapter of Snake Hunt. Opening pages, we're going into the brainwashing chamber with Sean, Dawn, Tommy, Budo, Airborne and Tunnel Rat. The Siegie is here as well. Cobra Commander is either retreating or pressing a pursuit with a good selection of Vipers. This is a great line-up of villains. It's an all-out close quarters fire fight. Cobra Commander is a sitting duck and I'm half serious that he should get killed right here and now. In the eleventh hour, all the Joes finally kind of arrive. They haven't got off the buses yet though. Come on guys! The Dreadnoks, fighting for the Joes, a development which has been a long time in the making. Is that Crankcase? The action underground is claustrophobic and frenetic. It doesn't need to be silent but I like this issue so far. Every time I see a dislodged ceiling tile I wonder if someone's hiding up there or it it's just good damage detail. The Crimson Guards are all pointing at her. Granny Demon gets some. Tunnel Rat gets hit. Torpedo looks great. Hawk is both upstairs and downstairs and he's all "little Arashikage kid, why are you here?" The Siegie turns against her own. I know you all saw that coming a mile away but I still don't get it. The battle above ground is crazy. I like this a lot. Oh! We made it past the brainwashing room without anything dumb and unnecessary happening, so hell yes. I was going to comment about how when everything gets nuts, Cobra Commander isn't surrounding himself with Blue Shirts. They're all upstairs. It looks like the ninjas are just flying around. I really called it on the ceiling panels. Is this the final chapter of Cobra entirely? They're getting slaughtered. Only one Joe took a shoulder wound and like hundreds of Cobras are dying. We also could see that the town is being bombed in a previous page. This is the second major time the Dreadnoks have used the Thunder Machine to taxi cab Joes around. Okay that interior bus shot is epic. Firstly, Robert Atkins deserves a bonus for this issue. Secondly, every Joe on that bus ought to be dead. Third, Frostbite! Finally, just look at Lifeline's face. Look at it! I forgot the Oktober Guard and all them dang Oktober Guard robots were all there too. Hope Daina makes it, sure she will. If not she'll just be Robot Daina. Destro is looking good and powerful. This is one of his strongest outings since the Cobra Island Civil War. The Cobras are just getting slaughtered from every angle. It looks like the Joes are withdrawing. They shouldn't. This is it, this is Cobra's final stand if all these factions just stick it out for another hour. There is no reason to retreat. Yep. They left. F-ing kidding me lol. This was an epic issue in a lot of ways and I will need to digest my thoughts on it. Having all these disparate factions all collaborate is spectacular and worthy of a bigger deal payoff than we get out of this I feel. However, perhaps this is the spiritual end of the series to some affect. I don't think all these parts will come back together again for a bigger ending to the series than this. I'm still holding out hope that 310 can be the final issue of the series. That's just under three years of issues from now. If it needs to be cut short, than 300. However, this was so large in scope by this final issue that it gave me a positive feeling about what will happen if the series ends poorly. This will be easy to view as a major final capstone to the series. If anything from this issue sticks, Cobra is decimated. We've seen it before, Cobra Commander always rebuilds, but the volume of ex-Cobras attacking him in this issue was significant.

Another great review! I started my own IDW read along a while ago, but I’m way behind this thread. Still, I love seeing the covers and reading the most current recaps as soon as they come out.

Thanks for letting me know! I appreciate the feedback.
We're really getting close to caught up with the current point in the series soon. There is Untold Tales, Murder by Assassination, and then the currently running spotlight issues. That is 13 issues from now. Essentially we're looking at mid-April, third week, to catch up to where the series is now. If IDW can put out one issue for January - February - March then that pushes this review thread into the first or second week of May. At that point we will be concurrent with the monthly releases. I'm not sure there will be a reason to review anything from the same current story arc as is still being discussed on the first page of the comic forum. What does everyone else think?
