I mean, the focus is what made the comic the absurd success it was (Larry hit the zeitgeist DEAD F'N ON starting from day one and basically rode that until the 90s), but the cartoon had more writers, more room, and a bigger cast, so you got more room to play with the stories.
In all honesty, what I'd do with this series would be to take the Hama plotlines and tell them in the style of the cartoons, rather than just come up with new cartoon episodes. I'm really, really tired of the Hama fans playing up his work for FAR more than it is. I just binged the entire run up to about 5 issues ago from #1 to #284 or so. Only about issue #1-19 are solidly good, with s a few issues of the marvel run in the middle showing some promise, then promptly falling on their face (Cobra civil war, and near the end off the run where Billy, Destro, and Barnoess were finally starting to get some character devleopment). The IDW Hama run has been pretty uniformly bad. There are worse comic series done by Marvel, but Joe is down there at the bottom. I'm unsurprised that it's selling poorly. The Cartoons were a loss leader because they were meant to be a loss. They're 30-minute toy commercials that should have been coming out of a marketing budget. Those are always a loss. That being said, Hama's filecards were always enjoyable, and I think that proves where his strength is - worldbuilding. I'm looking forward to this series, as long as they keep Larry Hama and his lazy brand of 'military accuracy' as far as possible from it. |

Yes, nearly issues of telling the same stories in a loop for 35 years? Yes please I need more of that. Not.

There's a laundry list of items that I take issue with in the Hama comics, but to name just a few: - Too much focus on only a handful of characters over way, WAY too many issues. - Snake Eyes is a brooding loner with a girl fawning over him (obvious self insert device) instead of the team player that he is in the cartoon. - Uses military jargon to elevate scenes that would otherwise be confusing or just mundane to be something important-sounding. - Largely avoids non-action scenes that would be useful for character development. The exceptions usually involve Snake Eyes, Stalker, or one of his handful of other 'favorites'. - Has slowly been making Cobra less and less important (especially over the IDW run) despite the fact that the brand's most recognizable characters are all Cobra with the exception of Snake Eyes. - The brainwave scanner as a crutch for lazy writing. - The death of Billy should have been a much bigger deal than it was. There was no payoff, no universe-wide ripples of his death despite many characters being tied to him, and we got very little in the way of Cobra Commander's full feelings/actions on the matter, or how it affected him going forward. It was a one and done. - Dawn Mareno's GOD AWFUL origin (spoiler: it's the brainwave scanner again) I want to put out here that the only Joe comic I had as a kid was GI Joe #1 in the Yearbook #1, so that's really the only thing I have nostalgia for. It's what got me started binging these. Still love the profile art in that book. EDIT: just wanted to point out that I mean SE is a self insert for the reader, not Hama. It turns the book into what is otherwise a story about many characters into a power fantasy. Last edited by BizCopperhead; 01-01-2022 at 09:55 PM.. |

I've only read the first 3 or so, but those are loads better, and it's clearly because he was forced to wrap things up by the end of the book. Hama is quote4d (and I'm paraphrasing) that "he doesn't know what the book is going to be about when he starts writing an issue". That doesn't seem like a good mindset for what is a serial format.

Being a fan of the O13 (not so much Scarlett or SE) those first 10 issues are my favorite (except for that reveal in issue 10 of SE's ninja past). |

So the first issue of these was available last night on my Kindle. I finished it and was blown away by how close the art looks to the Sunbow toon. The artist and inker did some amazing work here. Destro looks particularly great. Scarlett's head shape and face is actually consistent instead of having her features move all over the place like it did in the toon.
The writing is fun, and the dialog is what you'd hope to see from a Sunbow comic. You can hear the voice actors in your head as the characters rattle off their lines. There is something at the end of this comic that was both hilarious and poignant, and bookended it nicely. I heartily recommend picking this up. |

I don't not enjoy the full run, though. 'Member when Firefly comes back in green and he's a ninja master and all those red ninjas get up on each other's shoulders to form a scorpion or somesuch as that and Snake Eyes beats them. And that time that Cobra took residence smack dab in the middle of the city, so Snake Eyes beats them. And who could forget that time that Snake Eyes healed the sick, woke the dead, and drove little Scarlett right out of her head? |

It's amazing that this released today but is nowhere to be found on the IDW website. I also couldn't find it on TFAW but they have issues 2-4 available for pre-order.
