This Green Dagger 21 exercise is an MWX (Marine Air Ground Task Force Warfighting Exercise), and the USMC has these at Twentynine Palms about twice a year. The ones I've participated in had battalions, regiments, and sometimes entire divisions face off against one another. The Royal Marines 40 Commando was a subordinate unit under their trainers, the 7th Marines (who had the home turf advantage), and a Marine Special Operations Company, and a Marine infantry battalion (2/5). Most of the news headlines hyped the new Littoral Response Group (LRG) South which participated, but seem to forget that they are made up of 120 Dutch marines and 500 British marines. I doubt all of them were actually there, but some Royal Marines were (from the Commando Logistic Regiment, 30 Commando Information Exploitation Group, 24 Commando Royal Engineers, and 29 Commando Royal Artillery, and of course 40 Commando also). The 12 Raiding Squadron of the Netherlands Marine Corps was there also. At no time were any of these units ever alone, or not with the United States Marines guiding them, so that makes the overall numbers confusing to me. Even some of the exercise was at the Marine Corps' Mountain Warfare Training Center to the northwest of Bridgeport, California, more than 400 miles north of Twentynine Palms, and had part of 40 Commando there. Opposing them for this exercise were two Marine infantry battalions of 1,200 Marines each, for a total of 2,400 but because there were other supporting USMC units, that number goes even higher. When considering that the United Kingdom's Royal Marines number less than 8,000 personnel, the few hundred Royal Marines that recently went to Twentynine Palms must have been amazed after witnessing several thousand US Marines coming over the horizon to attack them during this exercise.
