I'm not participating in the Haslab, but it's interesting to watch anyway.

As I patiently and very excitedly await my Zap order, I have found myself wondering. Can the great man produce one of these mobile aircraft carrier cranes. In the same dimensions as the Skystrikers and USS Flagg vehicles.
What do you say Zap .... Up for the challenge? After my order is complete naturally. Last edited by Highlander; 11-17-2023 at 08:33 PM.. |

EDIT: Oh, I guess the clear canopy is resin. I should have figured that. Taking a closer look at his stuff on my computer at home rather than on my phone, I'm not sure it's 3d-scanned after all. The stabilizers are missing the rivet detail as well as one of the panel lines. If it was 3d-scanned those should be there. Then again, if you've taken the time to hand-build a model, why skip over those details? If you are skilled enough to hand-build a model of the canopy, why not also beef up the mounting pegs where those canopies usually break? If you scanned the canopy, where did the extensions of the side tabs go? There is usually some thicker "glass" above those side tabs. Not that this needs to be there, I'm just saying that its absence implies hand-build modeling rather than 3d scanning. The clues lead in neither direction. Now I'm curious. Either way, those clear canopies are the most interesting but if you do chat with him I'd recommend he build up that hinge area to make the mounting tabs stronger. I don't know if clear resins are brittle like clear plastics are, but that's a concern I would have as a buyer. I wonder if the clear resin will take synthetic fabric dye. He might be able to get yellow canopies and smoked glass appearance. That would be pretty neat.

From his post: " print, wash in alcohol, dry for 24 hours, apply a VERY thin coat of liquid resin, let set for 30 seconds for the liquid to 'settle', cure under UV for 1 minute, then fully submerge in water and cure for an additional 2 minutes."

He's on the facebook Gijoe 3D printing group (name is BrickswithWings). He has some weird technique of adding clear resin AFTER printing. I've printed with clear resin and nothing came out clear. THough the repro ATAT guns I did still came out good, but thats not a cockpit.

The detail is awesome and I've had far less print failures. But the cleanup is horrible and when you do get an error(like my tank got a whole and the resin dripped all over it) you are way screwed. I hope someone figures out how to do FDM at this quality.
