You're talking about a toyline that included exactly one token black character and one token female character each year (out of a cast of dozens of white male characters released simultaneously) for most of its run, and praising it for not ticking checkboxes? Interesting. Characters like Stalker, Doc, and Roadblock were literally created for the express purpose of ticking that annual checkbox. If a Hasbro executive hadn't mandated "You have to throw a bone to the black kids out there or that market demo won't buy our product," those characters wouldn't exist at all.
Hell, after 1987, the brand gave up on even bothering to tick the female checkbox anymore for a five year gap. The lack of female figures between Jinx and Scarlett V2 is much more glaring, but this is a military line, and though overall female enlistment in the armed services is much higher than the ratio in GI Joe (even in the 1980s), the US military did not allow females into combat positions until the 21st century, so I still consider it a win. I WILL AGREE however, that the "person of color"-to-white ratio in GI Joe is still skewed white versus reality. That point is fully conceded by me. Bringing this back to the Skystriker, it is unfortunate that we did not get the PIT crew, but that made 1 out of 9 figures possible in this offer a POC, and Scarlett covered the female base. And I would be willing to bet money that either Roadblock or Stalker will be made available in the Retro O-ring line proper before we get our Skystrikers in the mail. |

At this point, I don't care who is white or black or purple. How about a movie with a good story. Unless the movie is set in like 1985, then it's not "our" G.I.Joe from the 80's and it doesn't matter who is who.
I still think those guys from the first Transformers movie should have been G.I.Joe. They had a perfect group to build a team around, and how much more perfect for Hasbro to cross over brands in a modern setting then to have the arrival of Transformers on Earth be the catalyst for the formation of G.I.Joe ? Gets them away from that whole fighting terrorists that no one likes to talk or acknowledge these days. Keeps it all nice and PC and parent friendly for Hasbro. |

Megan Fox sold more Transformers toys than all explosions in every Michael Bay movie combined.
Gi Joe needs a few core characters that are well cast, have personality, with goals and motivation and a long term obstacle to overcome. Maybe use the avengers blueprint - Tony Stark, Thor, Cap, etc. Maybe 5 max? The cartoon did that if you remember. I recall Flint, Lady Jaye, Destro, Baroness, CC and of course ShipWreck being the main characters in most of the episodes. Give CC some real motivation and character, like Thanos. * EDIT: I mostly disagree. It certainly should be well-written and characters should have personalities, goals, and motivations.

I don't agree.* Part of the fundamental appeal that is somewhat unique to GI Joe (and why this convo is still somewhat relevant to the o-ring Skystriker) is the vast catalog of colorful characters that we all want to collect and want Hasbro to produce. If that's the outcome that we want, then we should want GI Joe media to support it. Tell lots of different stories with lots of different characters, or take inspiration from Game of Thrones, Walking Dead, or even something like Narcos, that constantly introduce new characters through compelling story arcs, while letting others die or at least fade into the background.
* EDIT: I mostly disagree. It certainly should be well-written and characters should have personalities, goals, and motivations. Removing Stalker from the Snake-Eyes / Tommy backstory is the biggest sin of all three films to me. It doesn't have to follow the most successful, longest-running continuity of GiJoe to be successful, but a new version probably shouldn't spit in the eyes of ARAH either. For the purposes of storytelling, a cast needs to revolve around a small group. This is for narrative purposes. But I would at this point rather see a team composed of Zap, Mutt, Stalker, Mainframe, Leatherneck, and Helix than the well-trodden "core group" again. Let's also all note the massive success of this Skystriker Haslab. This didn't happen because Hasbro decided to throw out the 80s. Let's compare it to the sales of the movie Classified figures.

Would it have been cool if they had *always* kept his race a secret? Sure because then like you said you could pretend anybody was under the mask. Obviously Sunbow ruled out him being a black guy due to his bare hands in the MASS Device but if that was all you knew and didn't read the comics then sure he could be Asian. But we don't live in some alternate universe where the comics were never a thing and since he was such a prominent character in those stories (many would argue *too* prominent) I don't think that it's some outlandish notion to expect that they would honor the most detailed and long lasting mythology behind the character. Well that quote is a complete fabrication on your part so there's really nothing there for me to reconsider now is there. Last edited by Khev; 12-09-2021 at 03:51 PM.. |

I'm fine with SE and SS being in the movies but I agree that it was a mistake to make a film *just* about SE, regardless of his skin color. The mask and the no talking really kind of require that he be a supporting character, lol.

Not sure why it surprises you, he was white in the cartoon too.
