For those wondering why the art is so mediocre. ARAH only sells approx. 9,000 copies per month. That means the title is most likely losing money, which is why the HC collections were stopped and we only get cheap TPBs now. IDW would cancel this except they are obligated to Hasbro to keep publishing it until their license expires or Hama retires. And I keenly expect 300 to be the end. Hama is 72 and has clearly lost interest.

I didn't go into this issue expecting much but I ended up really enjoying it. The ease of getting around the island was a bit silly but there's always been a level of silly in G.I. Joe so it didn't bother me too much. I am interested in Mindbender's plan going forward as well.

I don?t know enough about the comic book business to know if 9000 copies is profitable or not. The cover price is $3.99 so that?s about $36,000 in sales but no idea what costs are. What is the digital vs physical breakdown of the $9000 and which format is more profitable (I would assume digital but I may be wrong)? What is the wholesale price from IDW? How much does it cost to print and ship? What is paid to the creative team and editor? I think it is conceivable that the book makes a little bit of a profit at 9000 copies, even if it's just a few thousand dollars. I also wonder if IDW is going cheap right now and banking the funds to pay for a well-drawn final arc that will conclude with issue 300. If ARAH goes out, I really hope it goes out on a high note and doesn't just limp to the finish line.
The Reality of Mainstream Creator-Owned Comics | Zub Tales Basically, the publisher and creative team get to fight over 11%. So that's $3,600 between Hama, the artists, the cover artists (usually multiple covers, right) as well as IDW's staff and expenses. It does seem to show that margins are better for digital copies. Which brings me to...has anybody visited IDW's store lately? It used to be tough to navigate, but I had a decent shot of getting the odd issue I needed. Now, it's easier to navigate, but they seem to be "out of stock" on every single physical copy of Joe. |

I've noticed as well. Shockingly, I was able to purchase the Snake Eyes & Storm Shadow TPB (Chuck Dixon, Robert Atkins), which I had been hunting for on Ebay.

Finally got to pick up a copy of this issue today. I enjoyed it. I like the return to Cobra Island, i think the newbies did good. It was an origin issue wrapped in a mission. Not sure on the art....it's not "WOW!" but it's also not "BARF!"...it's just kinda there.(I'm sure that makes no sense to anyone else lol). I like that it'll have ongoing story points. Overall...I think it's good. I don't mind the reoccurances of the Brain Wave Scanner. I'm curious as to how they'll be using it in the casino

I don't know the specific sales anymore as with the turmoil with distributors it isn't as easily available but the last I knew this title for years sold around 7-8k, someone referenced 9k so that would be an increase. If it was losing money they wouldn't wait over a year to 300 to cancel it. Especially with IDW going down the toilet. I'd like to see the title go back to Marvel. I haven't really enjoyed this title since probably the death of snake eyes. The best thing is the John Royle covers.

For IDW 9k sales isn't really that bad lol.
Also completely forgets digital comic sales. which brings in typically a larger profit per issue sold, and heck it's how I've bought every GI Joe comic in the past three years. But they would most likely be bringing in a couple thousand more sales on the digital front. Digital also has helped comic book companies in that it brings in continued revenue on books, where as with physical books you sold only a certain amount of copies of the floppies and then that was it, you typically never sold anymore of that issue ever and would depend on TPB sales to maybe dig up some revenue later. Now with digital, those books still sell for years later with that money going to the publisher. If you find an old copy on a shelf in a comic book shop, that makes the publisher no money as it was already bought long ago by that store, but you go online and buy that comic digital, the publisher just made some money.
