Y?know, it?s weird, but I was watching back through season?s one and two with my girl (who is 39) and she commented a couple of times on how dark and adult some of it was. I got thinking about the entertainment for us kids in the late 70s to early 80s and how by the time the late 80s and 90s rolled around things got very ?kiddie-fied? for her generation. (Gen X vs Millennials) It never dawned on me because as ridiculous as Sunbow was. It dealt with things like Lowlight?s really dark relationship with his father, the interactions between people were much more adult. Financial manipulation, the dangers of fiat currency, legitimate business fronts for nefarious dealings, human trafficking, corrupt politicians, and election manipulation. These are things that were either completely shied away from just a handful of years down the line, or handled with very mother hen style sensibilities. I?ve never thought about it because as kids born in the early to mid 70s many of us grew up not being talked or written down to. That definitely changed later on.

Watching the synthoid episodes now, really makes me wonder how we aren't all scared from watching people melt with eyes popping out and rolling down their bodies.

She definitely went off about ?There?s no place like Springfield ?. It?s funny because the first few episodes she was kind of rolling her eyes and saying how ridiculous it was and then all of a sudden she was shocked by how many dark undertones there were to the point where she was kind of horrified. (She works in early childhood education) I just laughed. It was truly a different time to be a kid. The show id still cheesy, and ridiculously zany fun. However, it?s not surprising upon going back I and rewatching both the show and rereading the early comics why we grew attached to these characters. Beneath the far fetched plots of the comics, and brightly colored wackiness of the cartoon. These characters were very deeply written and fleshed out like real people and they faced grave dangers. Of course they still resonate with us.

There was a synergy between Hasbro, Marvel, and Sunbow. Thanks in large part to Kirk Bozigian and Jay Bacal from what I gather.

There was some stand out serious moments in the Sunbow series for sure, but it was nowhere consistent in tone and went full goofy kids stuff all the time. There was a more core set of characters in the Sunbow cartoons, while some characters got very little or next to no screen time. So many characters just had essentially walk on parts, but it was great how they did focus on some characters on a recurring basis like Alpine and Bazooka.

The final season of Sunbow did a good job of giving several 86 characters a focus episode if I recall. Lifeline "the pacifist" got quite a bit of screen time, and Slip Stream had a great Enemy Mine-type episode.

I mentioned awhile back that my ideal live action Joe adaption would be two concurrent series. The first a true anthology series called GI Joe: Special Missions where you had a small recurring cast of upper echelon Joes like Hawk, Breaker and Scarlett handing out assignments to small ?villain of the week? style problems to a rotating cast of field Joes hand picked for their specialties. The other would be a 24 or Man in Highcastle style series called Cobra where you get deep cover Joes (Chuckles, Jinx, Lady Jaye, Cover Girl, etc) trying to infiltrate at various points of the organization and interacting with their handlers. This would allow both shows to utilize the rosters of both organizations to their maximum potential, imo. Each season finale would utilize a ?crossover? episode.

Looks pretty good. I wonder where it will fit in the Sunbow timeline.
