It'd be nice if it kept the spirit of the original cartoon, but I have zero faith in IDW given what they've done to the comics in the last decade or so. Which is a shame since they started off so well.

Cover A was definitely not done by the guy doing the interiors for the book. I don't believe B was either but it is closer to his style.

SAN DIEGO, CA (November 18, 2021) With the nostalgic appetite for ?80s pop culture as powerful as ever, IDW is giving fans what they want with the February debut of G.I. JOE: A Real American Hero?Saturday Morning Adventures, a special send-up of the classic cartoon, shipping monthly and featuring the fan-favorite creative team of writer Erik Burnham, artist Dan Schoening, and colorist Luis Antonio Delgado.
Quote:
G.I. JOE: A Real American Hero Saturday Morning Adventures #1 will be available with multiple cover variants for retailers and fans to enjoy, each illustrated by fan-favorite artists long associated with IDW Transformers comics: Cover A by series artist Dan Schoening, Cover B by Megan Huang (Tartarus, Rangers of the Divide), and a Retailer Incentive edition by Billy Penn.
And if you check out the issue of the Hama comics that Schoening drew (#278), he's absolutely the right guy for the job. Everyone in that comic looks nearly identical to their Sunbow version. Cover Girl even has the Sunbow-style snow coat. |

This is the first comic book I'll be excited to buy in years. GI Joe cartoon plots, with melting clones, alternate dimensions, MacGuffin devices, ghosts, Egyptian gods, and Cobra Commander's face on the moon is EXACTLY what I want in my Joe storytelling. The more bonkers, the better. Seeing Cobra Commander holding a genie's bottle on the cover is a good start...

I'd love to revisit the Sunbow-verse, but I'm not sure if I'd want the take to be "The Movie never happened," or if I'd want it to pick up from The Movie and move forward from there. I think either approach could work, and I'd be interested in either one.

In either case, the DIC series would thankfully become DISAVOWED.

I'm in the keep the movie and start shortly after camp. There's a lot of story with the Cobra-La fallout to start with, and new recruits from 87 and 88 to start bringing in.

I'd like to see them fill in what happened between the end of season 2 and the movie, with the whole Cobra Coil faction and what looked like the start of a Cobra Civil War. Then maybe fill in what happened in the aftermath of the movie and events up to Operation Dragonfire.
As silly as it sounds, I'd love to see them have something like a retirement ceremony take place after the movie, award medals and citations. It would be a great way to explain why so many of the old Joes weren't in the DiC cartoon. Then pick up where DiC left off, and eventually mimic the end of the old ARAH comic with Cobra finally defeated and GIJoe being disbanded. Tie everything up nice and neat from when we were kids. Now if only they can get the old voice actors back. |

Maybe he's thinking of those giant, raw vegetables Cobra grew in that one episode >_>
