Hama...Hama...Hama...*sigh* please retire.
Where ever they found the artists theyve been using the last say 15 issues. Please return them. Do they even have pride in there work? Where to begin - Having the two new Joes give info dumpsnon their backgrounds in the middle of the mission. Especially Black Hat was eyerolling. The security is so tight and top knotch that they return from the patrol, no check-in, park the crusher..get out. Wander through the casino..setup shop..download intel..and never encounter anyone until the last second. Then we are to believe everyone standing there didnt question why a motorviper, a nightviper and a Viper are doing a security check? Dr Mindebender didnt ask hey why are you carrying the case Viper? What were you looking for? At that point couldnt they have just put a bullet in the head of Mindbendee a known wanted terrorist and killed everyone put a bomb on the over used tired brainwave scanner. Detonated it and escaped in the chaos.its like he ran out of pages and ideas and wrapped it up like saturday morning cartoon. Smh. I have to go back to the art. Why is every all scraggly..no true facial distinction..outfits are oddly drawn. Whole thing is bothersome

I really, really liked this issue - except for the in-mission "I'm a victim of -ism" backstories.
I like seeing a mix of new and old Joes. Outback, Cutter, Shipwreck and Polly are old favorites. Multo is cool. Mongoose was cool, too, except for the oddly-timed whining. I have to admit that I was impressed by his "prove it to myself" line. I loved the return to Cobra Island. It is one of my favorite locations in the comic. The way the Joes got by the outer and inner defenses was really well written, well drawn, and fun to see. I thought the Joes were going to have to fight their way out, but Mindbender judged the books by their covers and they got away without a single shot fired. That is actually very believable considering the bumbling buffoonery that we see in Cobra all too often. The Cobra Casino and Brain Wave Scanner have me intrigued. I have some hopes for what the BWS might be used for, but we'll see... |

That isn't only two brainwave scanners. It is clearly a cloning tank as well. Mindbender is going to make something.
First time we have seen Cobra Island since Firefly was abandoned there. This used to be abandoned by Cobra, so this construction phase must be the retaking of the island to some degree formally. Having two new minority characters be defined solely by grievances and resentment is as bad or worse than having a Native American character with feathers in his hair and a loincloth.

Knowing it was going to focus on the noobs, I wasn't overly thrilled about this issue, but they were mostly ok and I won't complain about Outback being included. The Three Stooges reference made me chuckle, but the brainwave scanner? Yet again? Please, no. And if that's a cloning tank, who's coming back Serpentor, Snake Eyes, or Dr. Venom? Ugh.

I thought the dark color palette was totally appropriate, considering it was a night recon mission.
I think we saw Cobra Island, once, after the Firefly/Ninja Cheerleader Pyramid adventure. I remember Hawk and somebody else showing up there and running into hood-less, mohawked, Zartan. The Casino seems a little cheesy, but it does tie into Cobra's older schemes of wanting to make money.

If i remember correctly...the mohawked Zartan was in the Cobra Civil War arc back in the 70s or 80s issues of the Marvel run..He was a liason to the Joes for the island. He showed up Mohawked, then switched briefly to his hooded look when he wasn't recognized.

You guys are right. There was the moment with Zartan with the Mohawk. Although that was definitely near the end of the Marvel half of the series rather than the Civil War era. It was the same artist who did many of the Transformers issues. Batista?

I had fun with this one! I thought the mission was interesting; it was sort of the classic Hama exposition that I love. I thought the characters were fun and had some depth, and I was really excited to see the Cobra Island stuff, especially since it looks like we'll be seeing more of it soon. While I'm not normally a huge fan of Dr. Mindbender or the BWS, I love seeing one of Cobra's sales/pyramid schemes with the casino. I was actually hoping to learn a bit more about the new characters, but that was a start.
I still have to go back and read some the issues I missed; can anyone fill me in on who the female Crimson Guard is? |

For those wondering why the art is so mediocre. ARAH only sells approx. 9,000 copies per month. That means the title is most likely losing money, which is why the HC collections were stopped and we only get cheap TPBs now. IDW would cancel this except they are obligated to Hasbro to keep publishing it until their license expires or Hama retires. And I keenly expect 300 to be the end. Hama is 72 and has clearly lost interest.

Found it. Issue 139. I think this was one of the few appearances of "orange mohawk" Zartan (or his "new look" as he called it). His 1993 Ninja Force figure, basically:
