The 1993 Mega Marines were a special detachment of Army soldiers placed under the command of a United States Marine. Those soldiers do not become actual Marines, but are called Mega Marines by their leader, who has high expectations of them.
The singular mission of the Mega Marines was to repel and destroy Cobra's Mega-Monsters and battle the new Cobra Vipers. From the file card: "Gung-Ho's background in hostile environments and experience in the U.S. Marine Corps made him a natural choice to command the Mega Marines. " Mirage, Blast-Off, and Clutch (who maintains their Monster Blaster APC vehicle) never were required to switch service branches during their brief time as part of the Mega Marines. Bullhorn has no mention of any connection to the Marine Corps, but by 2008 it was established that his Quantico activities was as an instructor at the F.B.I. Academy (not USMC). Mace just might be a Marine. Not for certain, but it's a reasonable guess. Hollow Point, yes. Absolutely. Sgt. Smasher, yes! Thank you, bassistcarlos. I completely forgot about him.

If you're counting Sgt Smasher from India, then there's also Sgt Slammer from the UK.

We're thinking of the newly introduced 2018 character, Sgt. Smasher (of Wilmington, Delaware). For purposes of recalling United States Marine characters, we were considering Sgt. Slaughter (USA), Sgt. Slammer (UK), Sgt. Smasher (India), and Sgto. Slaughter (Argentina) to be counted as a singular character on the G.I. Joe team, rather than several people from different nations all joining the USMC.

There was a lengthy discussion about Zap. He is an anti-tank soldier and explosives. In the USMC, assault men fire anti-armor like the SMAW (I have been retired for almost 10 years so the equipment might be out of date) but they are also the organic explosives experts for an infantry company. So, his MOSs match up.
Also, Ice Storm was Coast Guard then transferred to the Navy according to his file card. and clearly, Hawk's file card shows that he is Army, but the ME brown jacket hawk looks like he has USMC shooting badges. |

Col. Sharp. I've always had Mirage and Blast Off as USMC. Clutch was just a volunteer. Like Flint was in Eco Warriors.

April 1984 issue #22 of the Marvel Comics G.I. Joe series has Zap wearing an Army dress uniform at Arlington National Cemetery for the burial of General Flagg. The 2007 G.I. Joe Convention "Tanks for the Memories" box set included the Rafael "Zap" Melendez file card stating he is U.S. Army MOS 21B (Combat Engineer). The USMC Combat Engineer has an MOS 1371, right?

Mirage is a soldier, not a Marine. Granted, when Mirage was introduced in 1993 with the Mega Marines, the only clue we had (and a weak one at that) was on his file card which told us that he was trained by Roadblock, which is inconclusive on whether is he a soldier or Marine. However, there were four more versions of Mirage after that from 2002 to 2005, and every single one of them mentioned that he is a soldier on the file card. Regarding Gung-Ho's Mega Marines detachment, because we know with certainty that both Mirage and Clutch are soldiers, we are only left to wonder about the Blast-Off character. I believe it is reasonable that he too is a soldier, and makes more sense when considering what the file card mentioned about why Gung-Ho was chosen to command them (his background in hostile environments and experience in the U.S. Marine Corps).

No memory of reading the lengthy discussion you mentioned, but I don't understand how Zap can be anything but Army.

I honestly don't know the Army structure well enough but like I said, the 0351/0352 assaultman tow gunner MOS in the USMC fits Zap's skills very well. I don't know if Army combat engineers are trained in anti-armor or not. I can't remember if 1371 is combat engineer but the 13XX series is engineers, officers are 1302 and there are also heavy equipment operators along with combat engineers. He is probably Army as most Joes are, I just thought it was an interesting point that his MOSs lined up with the assaultman MOS |
