So a few things:
My understanding is that "neon and ninjas" didn't "kill the Joe line" but rather extended its lifespan for a few more years than it might otherwise have run. Also, it was not an unprofitable line when it was ended in '94. Instead the former Kenner execs who now had positions of power in Hasbro after the two companies merged wanted to revamp Joe into something else entirely (and thus we got "Extreme"). Whether it was bad blood from Hasbro having stolen Kenner's thunder as the premiere action figure company years prior, or just wanting to make cheaper (less articulated) figures....it wasn't lack of sales that killed ARAH Joe. As for the 2022 list, if there's one character I really kind of wish they DON'T go "classic" with it's Dusty. I would, however, be thrilled to see a six-inch version of his Pursuit of Cobra incarnation. Probably too late for Hasbro to change it either way at this point, but still. |

We've gotta get a Shipwreck at some point, hopefully soon. I know I've put forth all kinds of wish list figures, but you gotta get a Shipwreck in there. Although likely the more RAH Sunbow faithful version will be the one Super 7 eventually does, I really like the Classified styling (and price) better.

If I'm not mistaken Extreme was the second relaunch attempt after A.R.A.H. wrapped. Seeing how y'all initially responded to 6" JOE, I can imagine what the reaction to Extreme would have been. There was probably a collective "AWWWW HELL NAW!" followed by a "Fuck outta here with this bullshit!" from the fandom. At end of the day the fandom rejected Extreme because it wasn't A.R.A.H. Now mind you, my opinion is based not having read the comic or seen the cartoon. Quote:

G.I. JOE Extreme wasn't a bad idea, after all Extreme gave us Iron Klaw. I think the thing that hurt Extreme the most was timing. If I'm not mistaken Extreme was the second relaunch attempt after A.R.A.H. wrapped. Seeing how y'all initially responded to 6" JOE, I can imagine what the reaction to Extreme would have been. Now mind you, my opinion is based not having read the comic or seen the cartoon. Also it felt like several of them were practically just knock-offs of existing characters: Lt. Stone = Duke, Freight = Heavy Duty, Mayday = Scarlett, Black Dragon = Snake-Eyes, etc... |

Extreme had shitty toys made by Kenner which were pretty immobile and a huge departure from the superarticulated ARAH line. I was one of those kids that came into GIJOE late I got my first 3 joes in 86, a few in 87 and then started to really collect in 88 and I LOVED color. My first two ever Joes were Scifi and Lifeline because they stood out in the pegs with these vibrant gaudy colors. I loved figures like spearhead and lightfoot for instance and the second versions of deep six and wetsuit. Looking back now it seems stupid but I didn't mind the neon and the bright colors of the early 90's that really started around 89. Plus neon was huge in the early 90's in general. Everything was neon. Toys were neon. Turtles, toxic crusaders, swamp thing. It was a fad. Also, I think the popularity of the x-men line is what drove people away from joes. Although I collected both. But once they canceled and went to extreme those toys looked horrific in comparison to what mcfarlane was starting to do and what toy biz was trying to copy. I think that is the main reason for the change. That said, the designs of the villains like inferno and iron flaw were awesome and I want to see those figures in the classified line eventually. But all this talk of red shadows and iron klaw is sort of premature when we are just starting out and don't even have most of the cool joes yet.

The concept of a villain like General Blitz in Sgt. Savage that was an Android with human mind was really good and in his robot mode it looked pretty awesome... Then we had Iron Klaw which was also very evil looking and cool...
Freight and Wreckage were the two power house's of the team... They very characters in both cartoons but it was too bad that there was not a great toy representation of them or not even past the prototypes...

For my "Emily probably isn't going to answer this, but I'm going to ask anyway," question of the day. Earlier today I was on gijoe.hasbro.com. When I went to the "Meet The Characters," section and I did a search from Hawk, this message from L.J. popped up.
SORRY, THE CLASSIFIED FILE YOU ARE LOOKING FOR IS NOT IN MY DATABASE YET." -LADY JAYE Are you guys revamping the site or did you scrap it? Anyway, thanks for taking time out of your day to check in on us. The return of filecards would be a great addition. I agree. |
