Does anyone know the status of the Retro collection? I notice some figures and vehicles are impossible to track down. Are they done producing them? I know stuff like the HISS got a variant replacement which seems abundant for the time being..
I gotta say that the metal T-bars for the crotch on figures is way superior. While the line showcases some brand new molds and articulation, the plastic T-bars don't feel good right out of the packaging. This seems to be the new approach going forward. As a matter of fact my Cobra Trooper's left leg popped off when I was trying to remove him from the bubble. They've invested some effort into this line so I'm assuming it won't vanish right away, but it definitely feels like a drip feed. If they're going to just hit us with '82-'84 characters and vehicles right now, what would you like? What do you anticipate? If all's well, I'm guessing a Vamp/Stinger might be in the works. Rattler would be awesome, too. I'd really like to see if they do a Havoc or Recon sled, to be honest. Actually, anything from '85-'90 would be amazing, but if we're getting half a handful of figures for every wave, that might be far off. |

At this point whether or not you believe modern-era retro is dead all comes down to how much liquid you see in the glass.

I have a feeling the 'modern era' might be dead for now. From a marketing standpoint, I think they just feel 'too close' to Classified. If you pick up a retro figure for $12.99 and see at that detail and articulation, with proportions that look correct and whatnot - then you look at a Classified figure - for $10 more - it seems too similar. To the average consumer - retro is simply 'small' and classified is 'big' - but other than that they are the same.
The O-Rings will set the retro line apart from Classified. O-Rings look like our toys from the 80's. Classified looks like NOW. The two lines can co-exist in a way the modern-era / classified couldn't. Just my opinions... feel free to flame away... |

As much as I like some of the retros (Grunt/Scarlett/Cobra trooper) I don’t not understand how Star Wars, Transformers, Ghostbusters, He-Man, TMNT all got actual retro “re-releases” and we got teased with modern updates (kinda) and thin, flimsy cards.

While I could see them slowing down with Modern Era stuff for the time being, I doubt they will vanish off shelves. I am new to ME collecting but I've watched them debut and carry through in to the 2010's and onwards. It's usually a waiting game of a few years until their next line/concept for the modern stuff. It would just be crazy to put the Retro line on indefinite hold with the overwhelming success of Classified figs, though! After just 2 waves? Really? While everyone loves and remembers the O-ring stuff, the modernized renditions boast high articulation and detail that people can appreciate and value. Having some kind of figure line like that helps take a piece of the pie away from other competing toy lines out there and also compliments their Star Wars stuff, etc. I mean I love looking at the Classified figures but for me personally, they're too big and don't really feel like a realized 'Joe toy line without some promise of sizeable vehicles. I also don't have deep enough pockets to buy back all my 80's and 90's childhood nostalgia, so the current modern stuff strikes a good balance for me. We have to wait and see how this O-ring revival plays out..right now, the figures look like they'll be priced at just as much as a standard figure from the Retro line. I definitely get a feeling that they're marketing them as a premium collectors item, too. |

Yeah the cards kinda suck and the consistency of the figures articulation is all over the place but a sculpt improvement here and there make up for it. I've never owned a Modern Era fig before, so for me, the Retro line is pretty interesting. I just wish the thinner weapons figures come with were a little less bendy and fit in their hands better.
