Atleast the old O-ring figure actually lived up to the old "snap on, stay on accessories" tag line. Now it's press on, pop off and search the floor for a week to find accessories lol. Although to fair, Retro Stalker and Cobra Trooper seem to have a death grip on their weapons. I think Hasbro may have finally fixed that issue that seemed to plague the modern figures since the first 25th five pack came out.
I really do hope they give us some sort of O-Ring set for the 40th next year. Even if it's just one figure, they just have to do some little something for it. I would love to see a new Stars & Stripes Forever set, but actually have all of the original 13 Joes this time, and maybe even include the original three Cobras too. Huge bonus if they include both swivel arms and straight arms and both waists to customize the figures. |

I have nightmares about that super unusual 'warped claw' grip that most 25th figures had. Where getting a weapon into the hand, never mind getting it to stay, was nigh impossible. And don't even get me started on those 25th elbows that barely reached 90 degrees! I'm looking at 25th Blowtorch and the figure can't lift the actual blowtorch weapon because the elbows don't bend far enough for a decent range of motion and the tube is too mercifully short! I could go on, but ain't nobody got time for that.

I kind of figured O-ring was the best they could do in terms of technology back in the day, and I see ME as the result of what is now 40 years of progress. I know the complaints about ME, especially some of the 25th ones, but I guess being an "adult collector" I do like them better. I would see something like joytoy as more of a model than an action figure, but I enjoy the playability of the ME as much as o ring.
And while the decision to make their webgear, vests, and such as wearable accessories rather than sculpted details may have sounded like a great idea in theory (now boys can play dress-up with their figures just like Barbie!), they never look right. The molded plastic gear and clothes are too bulky and don't fit on the bodies like actual clothing or belts would. While vintage o-ring figures may not be as detailed in the sculpt or have 650 extraneous points of articulation (let's make their feet swivel 360-degrees for no reason at all!), they have a simplicity and elegance I much prefer. I think they strike a better balance of aesthetics and playability. YMMV. |

Admittedly, there's a lot of nostalgia and personal bias wrapped up in this, but I personally find modern-era figures very aesthetically unappealing. Yes, the sculpting has more detail, but they also have that unsightly hinge across the torso for no reason, and far too many of them have gangly limbs, are bow-legged and hunched over. Not to mention how many years it took Hasbro to figure out that diaper crotches look stupid before they finally fixed that problem.

No o-rings, but no hinge across the torso either. |

Don't get me wrong, I think it's super cool that the Hasbro evolved the figures and all, and I certainly ate them up for awhile, but, as time went on, I realized that ME just isn't my bag, baby. |

A lot of good discussion here.
Do the Retro figures look better than O-Ring? Absolutely. Do they satisfy the whole point of the line better than O-Ring? Not even close. Updating the sculpts may be done for many reasons we can think of, but I suspect one thing to be mindful of is that O-Ring looks "old" to people of a certain age. It's a massive nostalgia hit to people who are 35 or older, but if you're 20 probably not, and if you're 10 not at all. I suspect there's some effort to see if this line might sell beyond the "nostalgia" market by updating the look and feel to be closer to what a child today would want to purchase. i.e., there's a larger market if they update the figures vs if they go authentic with the O-Ring look. Now, you might say, what about MOTU Origins? Yeah, that's a good question. There's more at play there (first and foremost massive support in the line, vehicles, sets, and so on) but MOTU Origins is hitting all the right notes where Retro is trying something different and it's not quite hitting right (I'm still buying though). I'd much prefer authentic look-and-feel O-Rings, but I get why Hasbro is trying something updated. If their reasons for updating are expanding market, and that's not panning out (a self-fulfilling prophecy based on product wave size and availability if there ever was one), then please push on with O-Ring instead. I promise I'll buy 'em all.

Found Wave 5 Grunt & Cobra Officer today, so Colorado can be added to the list. There are two Walmarts here and one got a case of Wave 5 while the other got another case of Wave 4. Stalker overload! Even Cobra Trooper is hanging around for weeks now.

I saw on another forum that the Wave 5 case contains:
Cobra Officer x2 Grunt x2 Stalker x1 Cobra Trooper x1 Can anybody else confirm? It sounds correct to me as that is exactly what was on the pegs today. What is Hasbro thinking with sending out more Stalker and Cobra Troopers? Especially Stalker. Too bad they didn’t include Scarlett or Baroness again for those that missed them before. |

I just canceled my Grunts because, mehhh…I’ll use him for fodder if I find one in store. Forget it. Might start canceling my Classified 6” SE/SS, too. Marauders/Eagle Force/Skeletron are fighting for my attention, now…and the only scale I’m passionate for is 4”.
