Hey All,
Been trying to find some new GI Joe news and I stumbled on this older article and thought it made some good points. I was curious to see what everyone else thought?? https://bleedingcool.com/comics/rece...ay-now-comics/ Does anyone know when the IDW license expires?? Also off topic, wouldn't it be cool if Hasbro had a contest to have a fan design a new Joe for the team?? |

I think the comic will continue for a while longer but I bet no more movies and the other media projects they have may be done.
Haven't they done the contest thing before?

IDW has bigger problems, along with the comic industry. IDW just dropped their gaming line not long ago, which surprised many. There has been much speculation that Disney might close the Marvel comics company as it is not profitable and that they can continue the stories outside of print. If a massive company like that is having problems, it is easy to imagine IDW might drop licensed properties to stay afloat. But who knows? COVID changed so much with many comic shops closing, Diamond no longer being the kingpin of comic distribution, and new means of getting comics to readers through Kickstarter and other new companies is changing the game.

The character was Stiletto, iirc. They used Helix's body in her creation.

For a few years, GI Joe was part of Amazon Worlds, which basically meant that anybody could write what amounted to officially licensed Joe fanfic and get it published through Amazon worlds (Subject to an approval process, of course). At least a few people did in fact use the program (including at least one regular poster here...in fact I may be mistaken but I think Stiletto may have been his creation). Eventually Hasbro picked a few characters from those digital novels and let fans vote as to which one would get made into figure form. Stiletto was the winner. Sadly that program ended a couple or three years ago, I believe (Right around the time they were probably starting to really spin up behind the scenes on Classified, Snake-Eyes Origins, etc...). Some of the fiction that was produced was pretty dang good. Certainly better than the synopsis of that upcoming "official" Joe novel sounds.... |

If I'm not mistaken, Buzz Dixon had a story published.

This IP is toast. That movie shit the bed, just like the two before it.
They clearly are pudding headed dunces who don't get the inherent juice of the ARAH years. It happens. Some IPs go on to endless glory and others just get to have a small dedicated group of supporters. I think the move is to lean into the past and feed the old timers what they want while they live. |

'In the US, Hasbro's growth since 1980 were from acquisitions and the leveraging of the new assets. New product development was not as successful except for film and TV tie-in product lines with Jurassic Park and Barney. Thus, US sales were stagnant in the early 1990s, falling from 1993 to 1995. To turn domestic performance around in 1994, Hasbro merged the Hasbro Toy, Playskool, Playskool Baby, Kenner, and Kid Dimension units into the Hasbro Toy Group. Meanwhile, Mattel purchased Fisher-Price and retook the top spot in the toy industry.' |

It's too bad. It'd be nice if they could look at giving it a up. Some new characters with a little more grounded in reality but still using elements of the original costumes. What I mean by real is not having BBQ go on a covert mission to rescue a high value target. Leave BBQ on the USS FLAGG. After all, every sailor is a damage controlman (firefighter), nobody wants a ship on fire. Just like every Marine is an infantryman, they all know how to shoot weapons in infantry. Chuckles is an Army CID Agent, he is not the guy to send on capture kill missions. That's reserved for Flint, Falcon, Torpedo, Stalker, Wet Suit, Shipwreck, etc, (Green Berets and SEALs). I agree with the article I posted. No more ninjas which don't exist in military (there is no MOS for that) and let's see some cool Joes that are high speed low drag...
It's a shame about the IP. It has so much potential....sigh... |
