Inspired by a tangent in another thread, let's have a thread dedicated to sharing our favorite memories of G.I. Joe. Let's wallow in some nostalgia and remember a simpler time when the good guys always won, and the bad guys always came identified by "Cobra the Enemy".
I'll start by re-posting what I wrote in the other thread: Quote:
If my sister and I did all of our chores and were good all week in school, my mom would have a surprise for us when we got home on Friday afternoon. I can vividly remember coming home one Friday in second grade to find Snow Job waiting for me. He really made an impression for a number of reasons, not least of which was that he was my first not-green Joe. I was fascinated to no end that all of his ski gear could clip into his backpack, and spent many hours gearing him up and putting it all back on his pack. And as my first Wave 2 figure, his cardback left me curious and excited by all the cool-looking new characters I now had to collect. My inner seven-year-old is especially looking forward to Classified Snow Job just to see how they handle his gear, if only to recapture a little piece of that childhood joy.

Used to build these huge forts in my friends sandbox. He would get one side and I would get the next. Then we would try to flood the bottom part with water. We played in the water till it drained out. We did not know anything about sealing and why the water went away. Just two kids having a good time. The good ole days.

I was watching Missing in Action 2: The Beginning a few weeks ago, and remember I went to see it at the mall, and had just bought Dusty at ToyBox before. I really wanted to open him, but I knew I'd lose his rifle and backpack in the dark theater.
Man, my parents were a lot more lax than I am. No way in hell I'd buy my son a ticket to an R-rated movie, in 5th grade, and leave him at the mall for a few hours before coming to pick him up outside the Food Court. Guess I'm a Helicopter Dad. |

To be a kid again. We would also take huge rocks and try to stop the water in drainage ditches and make forts like that as well.

I had a friend that had an awesome atrium in the middle of their house. Plants, trees, and a little waterfall thing with a pump that gathered in a little pool at the bottom. We all went over there for Joe's jungle warfare, Masters of the Universe, and it made a great Endor. We even used to take Polaroids of our setups, like the old Wish Book photos. I'd kill to have some of those pictures.

As a parent now, that seems terribly irresponsible. And to keep this on topic, my mother also never felt too concerned about supervising me when I played with other kids. I remember many afternoons when my best friend Jonathan would come over to play and my mom would just leave for hours to go shopping or whatever. We'd stage epic G.I.Joe battles all through my apartment, extending from my bedroom down the hallway to the living room. One in particular I remember involved a small group of Joes staging a last stand at the Mobile Command Center while waves upon waves of Cobras attacked. Several brave Joes didn't survive that day. |

I just remember how great it was being taken to the toy store by my parents and seeing the amazing GI JOE stuff all "faced" perfectly on the shelves. We didn't have a lot of money so it was seldom that I actually got them but it was great nonetheless. It also reminds me of stores that no longer exist today that carried my favorite toys, such as Kiddie City, KB Toys, Toys R Us, and Woolworth's.

My brother and I being the only kids in school that had the Flagg. Even my friends who weren't into Joes thought it was cool, and a few of their dads thought the same.
