Nevermind the sheer willful ignorance of the fact that by 2008 we had seen major box office success from the X-Men, Spider-Man, Batman and Superman at various times, and even Blade the Vampire Hunter of all characters, so the idea of selling comic book characters on the big screen, and even obscure ones, was hardly outlandish. So...sorry, your analogy doesn't work.

A live-action series is one of the last frontiers left for G.I. Joe.

Yeah, it all can come back around, no doubt. It's just that we should all be realistic about certain things, but we tend to view this through a skewed lens due to our love of the property. Like, we should be surprised IF GI Joe outperforms something like Paw Patrol, and not at all when it doesn't.
Certainly Paw Patrol is a more main stream brand right now for an age range that plays with toys. I our day, kids played with action figures till 10+. Now it’s quick jump to video games at some early age. |

Let's take a trip in the Wayback Machine to 2008. "Certainly IRON MAN, THOR, CAPTAIN AMERICA, THE AVENGERS, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, ANT-MAN, BLACK PANTHER, (wait this is 2008 we're never going to get a live action Guardians of the Galaxy, Ant-Man, and Black Panther flick. Anyway...) name itself is never going to be a big force at the box office."
Your argument is flawed because we've never gotten mediocre, (let alone good,) live action JOE flick. The lack of interest in G.I. JOE isn't because of G.I. JOE it's due to this shitty ass live action projects that Hasbro, Paramount, and di Bonaventura are attaching G.I. JOE to. Of course GI Joe could be built into something great like Marvel slowly did with their MCU. But right now, no one is going to the movies on the name “GI Joe” alone except the old fans. Hasbro nowadays has two audiences to capture; those afore mentioned 8-11 year-olds who are now in their 40s, and the roughly 5-8 year-olds who are still playing with toys. The former gets Classified and/or Retro, while the latter gets Paw Patrol style G.I. Joes. |

According to a recent survey, "over two-thirds of the parents polled said their children play with the same toys they did when they themselves were young, showing how timeless classics that help with a child’s development endure more than the tech-centric toys of today."* Though, obviously, that statement is absurd, and no serious person could possibly believe that.
However, the results of the following study are of great interest to Hasbro (or so I've heard), plus certainly something traditional toymakers truly can "hang their hats on" ... "Exploring the Benefits of Doll Play Through Neuroscience": https://www.frontiersin.org/articles...y-neuroscience Oh, and here is a much shorter, simplified summation (of the report's conclusions), which many HissTank.com members may find more suitable/"accessible": https://blog.frontiersin.org/2020/10...fits-children/ * https://www.independent.co.uk/life-s...-a8635401.html

Therefore, I wanted to offer readers an alternative option. Not as if anyone has to publicly announce which one they chose to read.

Irrelevant to the discussion. There is virtually no mainstream interest in GI Joe. That is the statement I made, and trying to argue semantics over "who's to blame" is asinine. Hasbro owns GI Joe. Hasbro runs GI Joe. GI Joe ("officially") is whatever Hasbro says it is. GI Joe is not a sentient entity that can be assigned "blame" for anything. But your point wasn't about "blame". Your claim was that there was mainstream interest in GI Joe, and there is not.
Of course your assumption that there is "fault" is also fallacious. Public tastes change over time. Some concepts prove to be more "timelessly popular" over that time than others. If there were some magic recipe that insured a toy line or franchise would be a smash hit, then there would be no unsuccessful toy lines or franchises, because everyone would be following it. Quote:
You can't compare G.I. JOE to Transformers because people (in especially Asia,) like movies with giant robots fighting. Also, a crappy movie that does numbers has something else in it that drew people to it whether it's the story, the action, or somebody breakout character. With the exception of possibly Tommy, Snake Eyes had none of those.

Which JOE film was as good as Superman II, Batman, X-Men Spider-Man, and Blade?
GI Joe, in the meantime, has a string of disappointments. What lesson do you think Hollywood producers are going to take from that? Last edited by Jmacq1; 09-13-2021 at 08:44 AM.. |
