Last bits on New Build OG Snake Eyes:
First, from previous post, swapped parts of the two versions for an all Flat Black version: 2021-08-09_08-44-51 by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr Second (taken that same night, but forgot to post), a little figure size comparison between 2007 25th build and 2021 Retro build. Might be okay to mix and match OG13 figures for large group shelf displays or dynamic photos where figures aren’t side by side statically. 2021-08-09_09-44-25 by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr In the above shot, phone camera was set at figure thigh level height (makes the figures look bigger than 1:18 scale). I thought this angle might be exaggerating the height difference—and most don’t view or photo their figures at that level. But below is taken at a more common level of viewing, and size difference is still pretty glaring. 2021-08-11_12-24-20 by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr Third, some photos of a new head option I got Friday, from ebay seller cobra1678. I’ve been stealing heads from extra 25th Snake Eyes for these new builds and wanted replacement heads. I knew cobra1678 sold POC//30th commando SE heads cast in black and ordered a few of those. However he also sells another commando SE head that’s different and appeared larger than the 25th one, and I ordered one of those. Below are the two SE heads, flanking an unmodified Retro Stalker—for size comparison to Stalker (and target head size I was looking to match for other guys). 20210813_222438 (2) by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr The head on the right is the cobra1678 head. It’s wider, and taller—you can’t tell the height as well above due to the shadows (sorry) and the camera angle (again thigh height). 20210813_224554 (1)~2 by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr Above is the ¾ view, which shows the size difference better. The sculpt is nice from the front, but as you rotate away from the straight front, things get a little weird on the head… 2021-08-14_12-09-49 by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr View from side, the lower mask looks weird in shape, and the sculpt at the back of the head isn’t low enough to cover the neck joint. There’s also lots of mold flash at the very back of the cast—but it can easily be cut down. 2021-08-14_01-14-48 by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr Back to the front again, based on this view and the size of the head, I think this cobra1678 is the head I’m going forward with for my set—mostly due to the better size. The 25th head is a little smaller than the other heads I’m using for other OG’s in the set, but wasn’t terribly undersized. Still, from photos I taken previously, I want to see if this larger head works better. I’ll start messing with those photos this weekend (after a few more tests on some new helmet options for me). 2021-08-14_01-14-55 by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr |

GI Joe Retro OG09 [First Take]
Looks like Grunt is hitting stores this week, I figured I'd get a group shot of my guys at First Take, pre-Wave 5. The new Grunt's helmet could really alter the direction these guys develop going forward. We'll see how it looks pretty soon... 20210903_013559 by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr Not too many changes from what has been previously shown. I did repaint Stalker's skin to make it a bit less shiny and vivid. The idea was also to see if some thicker coats of paint could smooth out the deeper sculpting and making him looker somewhat younger (yet no less mean), but I never got around to adding all those thicker coats. It's weird for me to stick with just the nine instead of the full 13, but I didn't really want to stay within the parts available and compatible at this time, and really see stay within this new official build. The modern MTF helmet is the only thing really throwing me off because of its anachronism--but I really like the look (and seeing that new Roadblock in classic gear plus modern helmet makes accept this here a lot more). Sticking with a 9 man set, the ensemble can somewhat fit a modern army fire squad if you can imagine Hawk as a NCO and Clutch as an automatic rifleman (that last one is really a stretch though). I can imagine the breakdown as below: Squad Leader: Hawk Team Leaders: Stalker, Grunt Riflemen: Snake Eyes, Breaker Automatics: Clutch(!), RockNRoll Grenadiers: Short-Fuse, Zap 20210903_013559 (1) by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr I am pretty eager to start the hunt for Grunt this weekend. I've had good results of finding stuff at the same time people start reporting sightings for the Retros. Also, I still have a few extra Stalkers to mess with. I have some ideas for paint concept figures, but haven't had the time in the last few weeks (or haven't been manically enthused to make time I don't really have).

This is a great ensemble. Well done. Individualized, yet a team.

You probably said this already, but is the poc/50th snake eyes head too small for this sculpt?

HHFF,
This is a great group photo shoot, and it answers a question I've been wondering for some time, and that is whether each of your OG13 customs were separate figures or if you reused a body for various characters. Unless you've pulled off some flawless Photoshopping, it looks like each of these is its own separate custom. I think using the new retro Stalker/Grunt body consistently for the male OG13 figures (I realize Clutch has a Cobra torso, but his vest gives him bulk) kind of normalizes the muscular design of the body. Great work! Jason |

Awesome work! This commando Snake Eyes is the best I've seen so far. Need one of this to myself.

Great work! Jason The bulky body does get normalized with multiple use. I really wanted to see that result in getting at least nine of these guys together. I brought up before that I was excited in having bigger (taller really) OG13 figures that could stack up with my post-1982 figures (25th OG's too short). I think the next photo sessions will be combining these Retros with my lastest 1983 class figures as compared with the 25th's with the 1983. Quote:

2021-09-04_01-58-29 by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr Above, I did my standard stuff of drilling the head hole a little wider to slip in the barbell head easily, and drilled the hole a little deeper. The head is small visually compared to other heads. Best to compare to Stalker because of lack of helmet. The other issue is that the head is to small around the base, and won't slip down around the neck despite the deeper hole head. So you'd have to dremel or cut off the whole bottom base of the head to just fit the neck. I'm already convinced to not use the small head, so I'm not willing to cut this head up more to get it to sit properly lower. But... 2021-09-04_01-58-17 by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr For a better comparison with having the head lower on the neck, I took the dumbbell out completely, and squeezed the head over and down the neck while the neck was still warm and soft. It doesn't look as bad as I thought, but the head is small. It's a bit smaller than the 25th head, which is also slightly smaller than the Stalker head. Plus, there's a lot of mod that needs to be done to the head. This would be fine if you had spares (would have been nice to have extras from the previous recent Retro Snake Eyes), but I imagine this head works better on the body it came with. For me, I like the cobra1678 cast and using a different sculpt for this than all previous versions. If not convinced, you could also test it out my removing the dumbbell. |
