Of course, high-standard, master-class work as usual.
…and I love the Murray-Head-Bangkok reference further up the thread!

Shock Trooper was an extremely great figure, a shining example of the POC era. But it lacks any visual elements or nods to the classic designs. I do keep one on display, but he really has no place in the main Cobra Shelf display, and not in the O13 set. Quote:
HHFF,
I have read and re-read your review and comparisons of the new retro Cobra Soldier with the other previously released Cobra figures. While I do think that your minor paint upgrades make this a better looking figure, I still don't think that it holds up to any of the previously released figures - sculpt-wise (you've made a very good argument about the playability of the figure, but that alone just doesn't cut it). Just looking at this picture alone shows the cheap, cartoonish looking features of the Retro Cobra Solider... Jason Thanks also for the deep critique of the new figure's sculpt. I had to cut that chapter short, but I also think most people see readily see the sculpt deficiencies. It's nice though to have them listed, and I hope my photos helped. I will note again, the 30th/DG figures are a pain to get standing nice and straight, and to stand without foot stands or magnets. That's the figure's biggest drawback (and not a small one at that). Don't know why they couldn't have sculpted the foot sole nice and flat... I'm glad you like the paint bits I did, though I wasn't expecting those bits to really add or sell the figure more. I was just bothered by the extra parts over the body suit being the exact same blue hue as the body suit. At the same time, I didn't want to spotlight those non-blue parts. An intial pass had a lot of tiny details and parts painted red and silver, but I though it looked to busy, and opted for simply a red small bit on the arm braces and thigh thingee. The sculpt is not good. At least when compared to the modern Joe era sculpting. You believe it's the plastic used, I think it's just the proportions and the tight body suit. The piping all over the pass may have looked good on paper, but doesn't suit [sic] the Cobra Trooper. I think that's why the original 25th looks better sculptwise than the new Retro figure. I'm not gonna army build this figure or replace my POC style O13. He doesn't look right standing next to other modern Joe figures on a Hebime style display (unless surrounded by a ton of other figures). He probably wouldn't look right new to the new Stalker and Grunt (vastly upgraded sculpts with all the new articulation fun). And a shelf full of these (and/or new Officers and FANG pilots) would likely magnfify the sculpt deficiencies. But I've got this figure lying around to play and pose. I'll probably bring him to work eventually to have at my desk without really worrying about people messing with him or stealing. For tweaking, I've got two or three little concept ideas at the moment that I'll mess with in the near future. One I can tell you all is that I want to see a painted blue with maybe some black wash makes him look less cheap. Last thing: you mention a leg swap with Stalker. please see thread linked below, and the issues with that (and a tough fix for that). Basically, you'll want to swap out the waist and below of the lower torso to fit the legs: https://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-j...ml#post5419050 20210618_022401 by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr Below, left figure has waist piece of Staker swapped onto Trooper torso: 2021-06-19_04-53-51 by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr |

Thanks for the link to that thread. The more I keep looking at this Retro Cobra, the more I am able to whittle down what I think is the primary issue. You mentioned the proportions, and that may be a lot of it. Looking at your kit-bashed Stalker above, I think the torso and upper arms are fine. I actually think the torso is a good homage to the ARAH figure. However, those forearms and legs just look too much like Fortnite figures to me.
As mentioned, I think I already have two of these figures (I saw a boat-load of this wave at my local Walmart yesterday, if not). Plus I have a custom fodder bag with random Cobra parts. So, I'll end up kit-bashing a couple of Cobra troops out of these for, if anything, just to have a Retro figure in my Cobra army. Jason |

They probably resemble Fortnite cause it appears like they turned the Joe brand into the later waves of 3.75 Marvel Universe style of making figures - complete with the plastic t-bar , similar body construction and articulation, the oversized limbs and wrestler proportions.

Based on comments above from jlw515 and then CG82, I had to test this concept out:
2021-09-06_10-50-40 by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr Retro Stalker body, with head, helmet, and webgear from Retro Cobra trooper. Stand is from a JoyToy figure to show the larger footpegs of the new Retro figures allow for use of JoyToy stands, including the little sculpted black lids of the clear acrylic cases. Head hole was drilled slightly deeper. Painted with Tamiya Flat Blue and Flat Black, and uses a Cobra chest logo from 87spuds. 2021-09-06_07-06-53 by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr Above, I painted my normal Retro Trooper in Tamiya Flat Blue as well for a better controlled coparson of the bodies. Complaints/comparisons for the CT body to a Fortnite figure are valid in terms of proportions of arms and legs, as well as clothing sculpting, but I'd like to get some photos of these guys with an actual Fortnite figure for a true test. Otherwise, I've haven't heard much issue with the Stalker/Grunt body proportions (I don't have any issue with them myself). 2021-09-06_11-51-59 by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr I've got some MTF elbow pads and knee pads on order. I've got elbow pads and they roughly work, but I'll wait for the knee pads before showing all that. The next phase of will be finding effective ways to remove the sweater texture on the upper body (likely a combo of Aves sculpt in the creases and sanding down the higher regions), and then modifying to accomodate JoyToy wraparound thigh gear. But those will wait a little, as I let this current look settle in. Last things might be to sculpt a more vintage inspired collar, and see if the POC head/helmet can be used well. |

Hasbro should have also used the Stalker body for Cobra trooper and officer. It definitely would have been better than what is currently being used.

HHFF,
Oh man! That Stalker-Cobra looks awesome!! I would buy multiples of that Cobra Trooper/Officer if they just used the Stalker body. I don't even mind the ribbed sweater look. As mentioned in earlier posts, I'm actually OK with the Cobra Trooper torso and upper arms, but the fore arms and legs look like a Fortnite character to me. I think swapping the waist/legs and fore arms with Stalker would make a nice, unique Cobra Trooper. The fore arms would need some sanding and/or filler to match the upper arms, but it would be a way better looking action figure. Jason |

That's a nice use of the Stalker buck. Too bad Hasbro didn't do the same.

Well… looks like I need to clean out the rest of the Stalkers in my local Walmarts… I really like this look.
