In a way, the film will have little to no effect. Because it is such a low-grossing non-event, it's going to have little effect in redefining the brand. Almost like Superman IV: The Quest for Peace. It was terrible, but no one saw it, so it did little to change the perception of Superman. Hasbro seems to have been extremely cautious about putting out merchandise for the movie, and for once did not cancel all their current Joe lines and replace them with movie merchandise, so it probably won't affect how stores view the sales of the brand very much. Hasbro at least learned that lesson.
The bad effect is in how Joe has now lost its chance to get another big movie push for 5 years minimum, probably closer to 10. Coming in second for the weekend to a movie it wasn't "supposed" to lose to is just as bad as the low gross itself. The brand is in Hollywood jail now. So if for some reason the brand does start struggling, it can't look to Hollywood to help promote it for a while. And, of course, the brand could've gone big league again if the movies had been as crowd-pleasing as Nolan's Batman films or the MCU. Further ripple effects...Hasbro's one-time dream of using big movies to promote their other brands as a multiverse is all but doomed. They got in bed with the wrong people in Hollywood, people who don't understand nor respect their brands. And people who have very little else of substance to show on their resumes, for that matter. It's inexplicable that a really big company let this happen to themselves, when even a much lesser brand like Hellboy was able to get real talent behind their first couple of films. |

If a Joe film bombs, and bombs hard at the box office, but no one is there to hear it, does it make a noise?

https://bygosh.com/kids-classics/aes...he-reflection/ *** It happened that a Dog had got a bone and was carrying it home in his mouth to eat it in peace. Now on his way home he had to cross a plank lying across a running brook. As he crossed, he looked down and saw his own reflection in the water beneath. Thinking it was another dog with another bone, he made up his mind to have that also. So he made a snap at the reflection in the water, but as he opened his mouth the bone fell out, dropped into the water and was never seen again. You may lose what you have by grasping for more. *** Translation, Hasbro has a G.I. Joe fan base, but they're willing to ignore it and throw it away in order to get "a different" audience that probably doesn't even exist. Greed and stupidity.

And in the same interview he says, "I have this funny reaction about Cobra Commander, which is he kind of looks like he’s from the KKK." ... ""I probably was the first person who went, “Are you guys sure? Doesn’t he look a little, like from the KKK?” And everybody’s looking at me like, “How dare you say that.” Some of the Hasbro guys were horrified." Then he goes on to say he thinks he was responsible for Hasbro not putting out a hooded CC in the Classified line. So, not only did this guy ruin the movies, he's doing his best to ruin the toy line. Bonaventura says this dumb ass shit. Hasbro releases ten hooded C.C. from '08 - 17 (go to C.C.'s page on yojoe.com,) in March of last year the G.I. Joe ARAH Diecast Nano Metalfigs by Jada Toys gets announced on March 31.https://news.hisstank.com/2020/03/31...ada-toys-68535 Eight days later the I Want You For COBRA jigsaw was announced on April 8. https://news.hisstank.com/2020/04/08...om-mondo-68561. I just checked Target's website and the puzzle hasn't been pulled and there's some in stock. When I called Hasbro to get confirmation on the rumor the customer service rep said that she didn't know if the rumor was true and she never heard of such of such a thing concerning the hooded C.C. I also didn't press her to get a more definitive answer. If we're to believe that the hooded C.C. rumor is true that means that this dumb ass decision came down within the last fifteen months. Then you have to ask yourself these two questions. Fourteen years after Lorenzo di Bonaventura compares a blue hood with red snake on it to a white pointed hood that looks like a dunce cap, ten figures, a figurine, and a jigsaw puzzle later why is the hooded COBRA Commander suddenly a problem now? And if the hooded COBRA Commander is problematic then why isn't there the same issue with the Snow Trooper? Concerning the hooded C.C. I don't know what to believe and were just going to have to wait and see if a hooded COBRA Commander is ever going to be released again. If we get four or five years down the road and one is never released I guess it will be safe to say that the rumor was true. Quote:
It is. The JOEs don't "play well," with others. I never never like the idea of G.I. JOE vs The Teansformers, then again the only iteration that I read of this was the Marvel version. Why would it? It's an interview and not a pitch to a studio. Depending on the mission why would they? Quote:
I've always said that the JOEs needed more antagonists. If I were doing a JOE trilogy I would use S.K.A.R. and Red Shadows as the antagonists, but it would be revealed they were nothing more than patsies for COBRA Command. Those two groups would do the "heavy lifting," so to speak while COBRA Command positions himself into a power position. Once Iron Klaw and Baron Iron Blood serve their purpose C.C. would have them killed. The problem with is idea is what exactly? We've seen this story arc before when S.S. and S.E. go on that unauthorized rescue mission to Borovia to go get Stalker, Quick Kick, and Snow Job out of that gulag. Quote:
Quote:
The issue with both is they were made by people who weren't adapting the source material faithfully and/or giving the fans what they wanted to see. They were "doing their own thing." So first they get basic character details and backstory wrong, then they get the tone wrong, then they get the look wrong, etc. It doesn't play out, "we're going to completely change who the character is, but other than that, it'll capture everything you know and love about the franchise."[/QUOTE]

And he shouldn't ever be. Not in this or any other reality should Michael Bay be allowed anywhere near a G.I. JOE film.

This was the final slap in the face to GI JOE. Larry Hama should be ashamed of himself.

It's not going to harm the brand with the consumer, it hurts the brand at Hasbro. They want to expand GI Joe's audience and they need media to do that, the movie not going anywhere puts a damper on plans to expand which can hurt their interest in supporting the product line.
They still have a TV show and a new animated series in the works, so hopefully those improve things, but SE isn't gonna do any harmful damage to the brand outside of maybe killing the chances of more big budget live action films. Giving fans a movie they wanted, was never going to make GI Joe a film success, the franchise has serious problems in being a thing of the past and has struggled to be relevant since the 80s. It's had sparks of returning here and there but its never been as successful as it was 40 years ago, and always GI Joe's return has been short lived till they try again. The fandom just isn't there in numbers needed to support live action and it hasn't been enough to support the product at retail long term. Hasbro needs new fans, new blood, and it needs to grow outside the US to really get it to go anywhere. Pandering to it's niche 80s fan base is not going to make it a success to support big budget hollywood movies. GI Joe just doesn't have what it takes to be a big movie franchise. Quote:
The fact is the GI Joe fandom is old, a bunch of 40-50 year olds, many of which have grown out of it, stopped collecting, and so on. And the older we get, the less of there is. In 10 more years, imagine how bad it's going to look for GI Joe franchise when more of us are gone or moving on from collecting toys? Heck ARAH will probably stop publication by then sadly. GI Joe has been held together with a mainly older demographic of men for 40 years now, it's not gonna last much longer with this niche audience. It's either they let GI Joe slowly die off, or they get a new audience and new fans into the franchise. It's that or the IP becomes worthless and essentially dies. I've worked many events at conventions, comic shops, etc part of our local GI Joe club and sadly the amount of times I've heard "GI Joe is still around?" "GI Joe is dead" "Do they even make GI Joe anymore?" "what is GI Joe", and other variations really gets annoying but shows how the brand has really lost so much. I don't think it had an impact either way. The movie was a generic action movie w Joe slapped on it. My friend's son had his first Joe exposure thru Fortnite and he LOVES snake eyes. I actually saw the movie w them and his son was so let down SE never wore his costume basically. I do think the Fortnite tie in was a better, more far reaching, move for the Joe brand.
