To be fair, Black Widow got a tremendous amount of marketing support. Hell, a vast majority of the biggest hits at the box office this year are films whose marketing campaigns started BEFORE they were pushed back.
I also compare Snake Eyes to Mortal Kombat (2021), and can’t help but question where all that budget went. I can only assume that the actors were vastly overcompensated or location filming in Japan was a massive money sink that was likely unnecessary. Snake Eyes reported budget was around $88 million (which I find more likely than the 110 million floated about), yet Mortal Kombat was $55 million. I kind of get the feeling there were some shenanigans going on behind the scenes here, resulting in some of the “haphazardness” of the marketing. I mean, Paramount was behind the ball to begin with considering our first look of the film came from a TOY REVEAL. I almost get the feeling Paramount might have been looking for a streaming buyer (like how they managed to salvage the garbage fire of “The Tomorrow War” by selling the rights to Amazon for $200 million, absolving themselves of the costs of releasing and marketing a probable $200 million flop). But Hasbro might have stepped in to push for the greater exposure of a theatrical release, with Paramount doing one better by putting in its summer slot. That’s why I think toys have been a bit scattershot in availability: Hasbro planned to have product on shelves for a fall release, but the summer release change came late enough Hasbro just couldn’t get stuff here faster (not helped by broader issues in international distribution). This is a situation where I wonder if Hasbro and Snake Eyes might not have been better served by a streaming deal. Again, Amazon picked up Coming 2 America and Tomorrow War for more than their box office grosses would have been. Hasbro sold the distribution rights of the new My Little Pony film to Netflix (Paramount was to distribute).

I rented "Nobody" tonight. Bob Odenkirk taking on the Russia Mob. Excellent movie. Fun, Quirky, Self-Aware, Violent as heck. Really felt like it lived in the same universe as Keanu's John Wick movies.
Why can't we get something like this as a GIJoe movie? |

I disagree. Nobody cares about the 'pandemic'. Even if people did care - they are not they type of people that are going to be seeing a SnakeEyes movie anyway. The regular people, for the most part, have been back to living their normal lives.

Budgets were about $200m for Widow, $100m for SE, $50M for Mortal Kombat.
After the second weekend, Widow was at $131m domestic, Mortal was at $37m and SE is at $22m. So Widow and Mortal had earned about 65% of their budgets by now, while SE is not even 25% of the way there. Widow and Kombat's foreign grosses were almost identical to their domestic grosses. Widow has doubled its budget in earnings with home viewing gross added in, and still will be adding more, including any future disc sales. Kombat hasn't quite gotten to doubling its gross theatrically, but has a small enough gap that it could happen with disc sales and TV rights. SE is going to fall drastically short of doubling its budget in revenue. Its box office is just about done here. It'll end under $30 million domestic. If it doubles that overseas, it'll be at $60 million. I doubt home video could even get it to $90 million cumulative to approach its budget, let alone double it. It's not going to be one of the biggest flops ever since its budget was kept in the mid-range. But it's going to lose tens of millions of dollars. |

SE may not even make in its entire run what Rise of Cobra made in its domestic opening weekend.

According to Box Office Mojo the box office for Snake Eyes dropped off 70.1% this weekend. Ouch! According to Variety it NEEDS to make $170M just to break even. This movie is going to lose a lot of money. I wonder if losing tens of millions of dollars could put a hurting on the movie division at Hasbro and the G.I. Joe brand? At this point I think we need to start worrying about the future of G.I. Joe and even if they continue with the Retro and Classified lines.

It took 19 years after Superman IV before Superman Returns was made. That's basically how far this sequel's gross has fallen from the first two movies. The second Joe movie looks like it was profitable from theatrical alone. The first most likely became profitable after home video. There were several Superman TV shows during that 19-year gap. That's the only shot Joe is going to have for a long time. I imagine we'll still get a cartoon if it's already in the works. I can imagine a small-scale live action show being attempted at some point. Unfortunately they have even more incentive to run away from anything ARAH-related now. When you manage to scare Hollywood off from using your #1 character, you've sure accomplished something. I would guess a show would scale things down to just Joe Colton now, as a Macgyver type of character. Or G.I. Jane as a Charlie's Angels type unit with Scarlett, Lady Jaye and Covergirl...two of them now non-white. When you can't afford to do full-scale ARAH Joe, and you've ruined Snake-Eyes, you're low on options.

The positive there is that both toy lines were selling through well before the film was ever in the normies' radar.... if it ever was. Most people I would bother to talk toys with knew Classified was a thing, ( and most were after them for one reason or another) but had no clue that a movie was on the way. Don't get me wrong, Hasbro is not exactly known for it's wise decision making concerning this particular franchise, but I think the film delay was actually a plus here... they have to be able to see now that success is there to be had, regardless of whether or not there's a half-assed media tie-in. If anything, the fact that it flopped hopefully means that they'll just drop the Origins facet of Classified and free up some budget towards the good stuff.
