I wouldn't say that Joe was going international since the beginning. I see it more as an exchange program like we actually have with other countries. We used to have a British exchange pilot at my old unit. I've worked with some Australian aircrew members a few years ago to integrate them into a big exercise we had. Just because Joe has foreign members, doesn't mean it is changing to an international organization.

1) Because the JOEs are Americans.
2) Most movies take place in America with American characters. G.I. JOE doesn't need to appeal to an international market anymore than any other film. Besides, this is the second time that they tried the global integrated joint operating entity concept and The shit ain't working. They fandom is demanding that (and Hasbro needs to,) go to what does work. |

Don't forget Joe wasn't even an organization in the beginning. The brand went through a massive reinvention in '82. Becoming an international organization is an natural progression I feel, given how diverse it already is.

You're not wrong, but the brand has been going international since nearly the beginning:

I always thought the Street Fighter movie tried to use an International GI Joe formula, albeit horribly.

In recent years, most big-budget Hollywood tentpole movies make more money from the international box office than domestic. Especially China, which is a huge market with movie attendance rates much stronger than America. Given how expensive they are to make, to distribute, and to market, movies like this can no longer be profitable without international appeal. And as much as you may not want to believe it, the "MURICA FOREVER, MUTHERF***ERS!!!" attitude is extremely unappealing to just about everyone else in the world. Covid is to blame for some of the numbers but the movie was gonna flop either way, just not as bad maybe. Even movies like Fast and Furios, BW, and others are seeing mediocre performances and general trends are seeing lower amount of folks going to the movies. Internationally theaters in some places have closed again and more restrictions are going up with lock downs, so that doesn't help.
Folks keep wanting to blame everything being "woke", yea get over it. Not pissing off a few angry white guys isn't gonna change how the movie performed. If they made this movie with a white blond guy, it would have not changed it's performance either, the movie just didn't work out and it's not cause of "wokeness" or whatever the current political boogieman folks keep using for any random thing they hate. Also lot of folks seem to have missed that Henry Golding Snake Eyes was an American in this film... oh yes it's cause he's not white white. Quote:
There is no "future" for the "GIJoe Film Franchise." Because these idiots hate "A Real American Hero-" the storylines and characters that have a worldwide fanbase- and thought they could crap out (a third) soulless, generic action movie about a "global" team. And fans would eat it up this time, no really.
GI Joe's only long term success was in America, even the handful of regions where it had some popularity was short lived and that was nearly 40 years ago. Most of these regions never saw GI Joe ever again since almost 4 decades, the only time GI Joe got pushed internationally again hard was for Rise of Cobra which had questionable success. So no GI Joe does not have a worldwide fanbase or legacy, it's mainly an American franchise loved by older American males. Really GI Joes hardcore fanbase is not enough to make a successful big Hollywood film franchise. They need new fans, they need international draw, they need the brand to expand and be accepted by more people. Last edited by PanzerKrake; 07-28-2021 at 10:39 AM.. |

Maybe G.I. Joe is better-off being a niche brand...
