Perfect storm for this movie to fail.
1. Ninja/Samurai movies are a dime a dozen on streaming services. 2. Delta variant fears still abound. 3. Because of that, and COVID in general, audiences are much more selective on what they leave the house to see at a theater. 4. 3. Circles back to 1. I'll be in the minority with this thought: a comic-accurate GI Joe Snake Eyes origin movie, right now, would not have fared much better at the box office for similar reasons. Nostalgia is a hot drug right now. What Netflix has done with Masters of the Universe, despite the mixed reviews, has put a lot of eyeballs on it. As of last night it was still in Netflix's Top 10 most watched in the US. And that's not the Kids side. IMHO GI Joe needs something similar. ARAH/toy designs in a modern animated form that are unmistakable. A serial format that digs deeper into character arcs and motivations. A producer behind it that GETS it and the toy/ARAH legacy. |

That's the thing about these films that make bold/brash changes to a legacy franchise ... fail ... then roll out the excuses. They seldom admit they made a product that looked unappealing/inferior or that they lost the fanbase who--old or not--was the reason the franchise survived decade after decade after decade. They knew Snake-Eyes wasn't strong enough to stand on his own when they subtitled the film G.I. Joe. I've no pity for Hollywood or the way they'll gouge at-home audiences in 5-6 weeks with $25 rentals. |

I just finished reading that Snake Eyes bombed at the box office this weekend with $13.35 million, and cost $88 million to produce. Probably not at all what they had hoped for.
Eight years ago G.I. Joe: Retaliation grossed $10.5 million on its opening day, and $40.5 million over the three-day weekend. Adjusting for inflation, that's $12.25 million opening day, and $47 million over the weekend. But twelve years ago G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra opened at number one with an estimated $54.7 million, or $69 million adjusting for inflation. Not sure if this is a case of "Go woke, go broke", "blame COVID", or something else entirely, but this franchise starter is looking frail on its opening weekend. Hope this doesn't hurt the planned toy products much, movie themed or otherwise.

I know the "woke/broke" thing is cute cuz it rhymes and all, but put out a good product and people don't care.

What's interesting about the interview is the writer from Uproxx, Mike Ryan, is a big Joe fan and was trying to push the issue with di Bonaventura. I think he was successful in getting him to admit all these movies have been a result of his own vision and "wokeness" in recreating G.I. Joe for today's audiences. We also no know where the Cobra Commander with cowl cancellation originated from. G.I. Joe media will never be faithful to source material like the comics, file cards, and Hama's vision as long as this guy pulls the strings.
